For 58 of those years, he was the best friend and loving husband of Vivian (Ramsay). His daughters Meagan (Vancouver, BC) and Stephanie (Lymington, UK) were fortunate enough to arrive in time to say goodbye, share memories, and hold his hands. Laurie will be fondly remembered by his grandchildren, Sebastian, Georgia and Cameron and his son-in-law Chris. He was the honorary patriarch of the Ramsay Clan, his adoring extended family. He was much loved by his parents, the late Court and Gwen Smith and late brother David, all of Sault Ste. Marie.
Laurie had a long career as a CPA. He retired as a senior partner of the local office of BDO and was senior vice president of BDO's National Insolvency Practice.
Most who knew Laurie were lifelong friends. He lived a full and joyful life. He had many interests and activities including travel, boating, skiing, country-western music and drinks with friends. In the last few years, he was devoted to his daily crossword and to his garden and lawn, scissors in hand. To the end, he played a surprisingly crafty game of Scrabble.
Special thanks to Genevieve and Ryan, the most kind and helpful neighbours. Thank you also to Dr. Fera for taking care of Laurie for many years. Laurie would have appreciated memorial donations (payable by cheque or online) to SAH Foundation, ARCH, the Salvation Army or a charity of your choice.
A private family service will be held at the Arthur Funeral Home - Barton & Kiteley Chapel (492 Wellington St. East 705-759-2522). Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be offered at www.arthurfuneralhome.com for the Smith family.
