(August 17, 1935 – April 2, 2023) – Helen passed away peacefully on Palm Sunday, at the age of 87, with her loving husband, Joseph Douville, by her side. She is predeceased by her parents Raymond and Elgantine Cudlipp, her brother William Allan Cudlipp, and her cousin and close friend Patricia Cooper. She is survived by her husband, her sons Steven (Shirley), David (Linda) and Bruce (special friend Laura Strum), her grandchildren Sarah Chomicki (Piotr) and Matthew Douville, and her great grandson Nathan. She will be remembered fondly by her cousin and close friend Bev Rollins, and by many relatives in the extended Dool, Cudlipp, and Douville families. She also lives on in the hearts of her friends from work and from church.
Helen was born in Sudbury and grew up in Sault Ste. Marie. Following her graduation from Sault Collegiate, Mom trained at the Plummer Memorial Public Hospital School of Nursing, and worked as a registered nurse from the 1950s to the 1980s, in Toronto, Moose Factory, and Sault Ste. Marie. She spent over fifteen years with the Victorian Order of Nurses.
Helen married Joseph in 1966, and together, they had many adventures, raising a family, spending summers at their cottage, and travelling across Canada and the world. Following her retirement from nursing in 1988, Helen and Joseph ran a Bed and Breakfast, opening their home to guests from around the globe.
We remember her love of music, travel, and dogs. We remember her hospitality and kindness – cooking meals, entertaining company, doing off-duty nursing, and being there for her friends. At the heart of it, she loved people. We also remember that Helen was a devout Christian, who was active in her community of faith, and who lived in hope of spending eternity with God.
Her family would like to thank the many workers with the Alzheimer Society and Bayshore who provided care for Helen while she lived at home – especially Keara, Amanda, and Valerie. The family also wishes to thank the nurses, doctors, PSWs and other staff who cared for Helen at the F.J. Davey Home in the final seven weeks of her life. Thanks as well to Helen’s cousins Bev and Rhoda, for your many acts of kindness to Helen and to us.
