The family of Harold James McQuarrie announce his passing at Cedarwood Lodge, Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario on Saturday, September 24, 2022. He was a much-loved father, stepfather, grandfather, and great grandfather. Pre-deceased by his parents Donald Allen McQuarrie and Ellen Margaret McQuarrie of Gore Bay, Manitoulin Island and his five siblings and their spouses Ronald (late Billie) and (late Joanne), Kaye Try (late John), Joyce Kent (late Bob), Jack (wife Arlene) and Ian (late Alannah).
Cherished husband of the late Elda Mary Jones and pre-deceased by brother-in-law Bud Jones (late Doris) and Iris MacMillan (late William). Beloved father of Ellen Eddy (Rob) and Sandra McQuarrie. Much loved stepfather of Judy Walker, Pat McFarlane, and Erin Hernden (Don). Dearly loved Grandfather of Jennifer Reid (Derek), Michael Connell (Tracy), Emily Matthews (Brandin), Cayley Matthews (Dan), Ken Hernden (Jackie), Kate Scratch (John), Erin Kohler (Ray), Megan Lee (Nathan), Richard McFarlane (Laura), and Matthew McFarlane. Great Grandfather, known as Grandpa McQ, to Jacob, Dylan, and Joseph Reid; Jayden and Olivia Connell; Carys Hernden; Lizzie and Kai Radke; Hayley Durrant(Jason); Jonah and Tobey Lee; Sadie and Seamus McFarlane. Great, Great Grandfather to Carson Durrant.
Uncle of many nieces and nephews on both sides of the family.
Up until 2020, he attended many family birthdays, baptisms, and weddings in the Sault. Harold whole-heartedly supported his family by helping with reno projects, attending concerts and plays featuring grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and all things Celtic. His coffee time friends in the city meant a great deal to him. He was a member of the Masonic and Shriner organizations in Sault Ste. Marie and a sidesman at St. Luke’s Cathedral for twenty years. His vast curiosity and ability led to many hobbies, including a legendary railroad collection, map making, historical research, and gardening. He was an environmentalist, conservationist, and had a life-long and deep love of all animals. His love for Cockburn Island led to a Heritage Award from the Province of Ontario in 2004, recognizing his work in preserving the history of the island and the fabric of its buildings. During his lifetime he worked for the Ontario Paper Company and the Algoma Central Railway as a forester.
The family offers heartfelt gratitude to all the staff at Cedarwood Lodge for their care and compassion.
Harold’s family wish to invite family and his many friends to join them at a Memorial Evensong on Thursday, October 6, 2022, at 6 pm at St. Luke’s Cathedral (160 Brock Street). The Very Reverend James McShane officiating. A reception will follow at Quattro Hotel & Conference Centre (229 Great Northern Rd.) in celebration of Harold’s life. Interment Maple Ridge Cemetery on Saturday, October 15, 2022 at 11am.
