Forever in our hearts, we will always remember our dear Grandmother, “Ah Ma” Yuet Sin Chan who passed away at the age of 99 on May 15, 2011 at St. Paul’s Hospital.
Grandma was born on Sept 2, 1911 in Kwang Tung, Toisan, China. She married at the age of 18 and single handedly raised three sons after her husband, Shu Wo Lo, emigrated to Cuba while she was still pregnant with her youngest child. She had never reunited with him but maintained a distant relationship for the next 40 years until his death.
She moved to Hong Kong in 1949, then immigrated to Canada in 1978 and settled in Prince Albert where she helped our parents in raising us, her two granddaughters. In 1991, she moved to Saskatoon where she spent most of her senior years living independently at the Riversdale House until the age of 98.
Our grandma had many talents. She loved to draw peacocks and chrysanthemums, and had spent many afternoons crocheting ornamental duckies, baskets and cushions. She taught us to cook and enjoy home cooked Chinese meals, however, her most favorite food was KFC. She enjoyed playing Chinese dominoes, listening to Chinese opera and watching The Price Is Right. Grandma was passionate about learning English. She studied her notes daily, persistently asked us endless questions and practiced whenever opportunity arose. She even tried learning Danish! Grandma was a feisty and determined lady who also appreciated beauty, cleanliness and order around her. The longevity of her life was accredited to daily exercising, taking “Bronsons Vitamins” and drinking Chinese herbal soups.
She is survived by her three sons, Yulan Lo in New York, Shiu Chin “Lou” Lo (Siu Ngan “Jean”) in Saskatoon, Shiu Men Lo (Bik Shan Wong) in Hong Kong; nine grandchildren, Zulima, Roberto and Antonio in Cuba, Betty (Niels), Candy (James) in Saskatoon, Alice Shuk Wai (Bobby), Wai Kei (Mabel), Joey “Ah Bei” Wai Hon (Fanny) in Hong Kong and Shelley in New York. She also leaves behind her great grandchildren, Connor, Saffron, Isabella and Lucas in Saskatoon, three great grandchildren in Hong Kong, and she has more great grandchildren and great great grandchildren in Cuba.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts to Nizeel, Laurencia, Minda and staff from Omni Daytic Care Home for taking good care of our grandma. We are grateful for the care and excellent support provided by the palliative care team from Homecare. Thank you to the doctors and nurses at the palliative care unit at St. Paul’s Hospital for providing comfort and compassion during her final days. The family would appreciate for donations to be sent to the charity of your choice.
The Celebration of our grandmother’s life will be held on Friday, May 20th, 2011 at 2:00 pm from the Acadia Drive Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow the Service at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens.
Arrangements have been entrusted with David Grambo of Acadia-McKague’s Funeral Centre (955-1600). Condolences may be offered to the family by visiting our website at acadiamckaguesfuneralcentre.com
