On Tuesday June 4th, 2024, Thomas Scott Mitchell passed away at the age of 75 after a struggle with cancer. Scott was born August 26, 1948, to John “Jack” Mitchell and Ethel (McDonald) Mitchell in Russell, Manitoba, the youngest of 3 boys.
Scott grew up on the family farm west of Roblin, Manitoba, attending school in Roblin. Scott broke his right arm early in life and as a result learned to write left-handed. As a youth he was active in 4H including beef, automotive and garden clubs. He was also active in sports including basketball and baseball – at one point pitching 3 consecutive innings without a hitter making contact in pony league. After high school he moved to Winnipeg to attend engineering at the University of Manitoba for 1 year. While in university he honed other skills such as his card playing and snooker. In Winnipeg he ran into future world snooker champion Cliff Thorburn, beating Thorburn in 1 of their 3 games. He also started dating the love of his life, Alexis Rose Nabe, who was from a farm near Togo. On September 4, 1971, they were married. They lived in Togo until 1984 when they moved to Saskatoon. They raised 5 sons, Jonathan, Greg, David, Bryan, and Darren.
Scott worked for a number of years as an elevator agent at the P&H Elevator in Togo. After that he was a manufacturer’s rep, selling clothing to menswear stores from Thunder Bay to Lloydminster. He also continued to enjoy sports playing slow pitch, golf, and curling while coaching baseball. He would cheer loudly for the Blue Jays and particularly the Riders, including making several trips to cheer them on in the Banjo Bowl.
Scott was a great card player and loved playing all types of games with his friends and family. Anything from Bridge to Kanasta to Kaiser to Holy (he burnt many a scorebook playing this game). Later in life he also enjoyed spending time gardening and tending his fruit trees even though it was difficult with his rheumatoid arthritis.
Scott loved a good story and had many of them from his years travelling across the province. He was a great storyteller and would happily tell you a story and if it was a good one, you might hear it a couple of times. Any road trip would regularly pass with him having a story about something he had encountered in the area you were driving through.
He was enormously proud of his family and would readily talk about his 5 sons, their wives, and his 12 grandchildren.
Scott was preceded in death by his wife, Alexis and his father and mother, Jack and Ethel. He is survived by his sons Jonathan (Deb), Greg (Erin), David (Katriona), Bryan (Arleece), Darren (Charlotte), his 12 grandchildren, his siblings Robert (Marilyn) and Brian (Marilyn) as well as many nieces and nephews.
Our family would like to thank everyone for their kindness and support during this difficult time. A Celebration of Life will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saskatchewan time (2:00 pm Manitoba time) on Saturday July 6, 2024 at Faith Lutheran Church (2801 Preston Avenue South, Saskatoon). Interment will follow on Sunday July 7, 2024 at Tummel Deer Park Cemetery at 2:00 p.m. Manitoba time (1:00 p.m. Saskatchewan time) followed by a funeral reception at the Roblin Drop-in Center. In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate donations made to Parkinson Canada.
Arrangements entrusted to Thea Katchmar.
