Thomas Stanley Hurst

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Dr. Thomas Hurst on Christmas morning 2023 at the age of 82. He leaves behind the love of his life Margaret his wife of 58 years, his son Richard (Brandy), his daughters Claire and Mandy, his sisters Sandra (David) Brooke and Diane (Mark) Crossley, his grandchildren Garrett (Kristin) Hurst, Ashli (Skylar) McCreedy, Austin Hurst, Susan Swayze (Daniel Dankowski), his great grandchildren Laylah, Kassidy, Hadly and John, and numerous nephews and nieces. He will be sorely missed by all of us.

Tom was born on February,11th, 1941 to Thomas and Connie Hurst in Sheffield, UK and grew up there until he went to Bristol University to become a veterinarian. It was there that he met Margaret and they were married in 1965. He worked in Veterinary Practice in the UK for 4 years and their son Richard (1967) was born there. In 1968 the family immigrated to Manitoba, Canada. The next several years were spent in various practices mostly in Swan River and Killarney, Manitoba and the family grew with the addition of Claire (1970) and Mandy (1972). It was in Swan River where he proudly obtained his private pilot’s license. In 1974 the family came to Saskatoon and Tom joined the Veterinary College at the University of Saskatchewan (U of S) and studied to become a Veterinary Anesthetist. When positions ran dry he was offered a position of Professor of Anesthesia in Columbia, Missouri USA. In 1987 he was asked to return to Saskatoon University Medical College at the U of S where he became Director of the Pulmonary Function Lab. While there he participated in many research projects including heart/ lung bypass in dogs. Two of his proudest moments were becoming a full Professor of Medicine (U of S) and being elected Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians (FCCP) He retired in 2007 but continued attending grand rounds and teaching students.

Tom loved to travel both with his family (camping and visiting UK relatives) and later with his wife including 2 sabbatical leaves to Italy and Australia. After retirement he went on many cruises and other holidays with his dear wife.

The family would like to thank the staff at Glengarda Hospice for their gentleness and the compassionate care that they gave to Tom in his last days.

A Celebration of Tom’s Life at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday June 22, 2024 at Grosvenor Park United Church (401 Cumberland Avenue South).
