She was born in Regina, Saskatchewan to Dudley & Elizabeth “Betty” Golden on October 4, 1952. At a young age Nancy and her family moved to Swift Current, Saskatchewan. Nancy developed lifelong friendships during her childhood, ultimately graduating from Swift Current Comprehensive School in 1971. She was active in music, athletics and excelled academically and remembered her childhood fondly. Nancy later graduated from the University of Regina with a Bachelor of Education; and while attending university she was an esteemed member of the Regina Symphony as a cellist. Nancy met the love of her life Ollie in 1977, and shortly after their wedding in 1979 they settled on an acreage just outside of Clavet, Saskatchewan to start and raise their family.
Nancy could be the life of the room with her infectious smile, laugh (sometimes uncontrollable) and ability to connect with all. When meeting Nancy, you quickly appreciated that her intention was not to judge and find flaws but get to know and understand what made you unique and interesting.
Nancy had the gift of gab, but it was never small talk. She was genuinely interested. Regardless of the degrees of separation, if you and Nancy had a mutual acquaintance in your past, she was going to find it. Nancy took a lot of pride in her successful teaching career. Family came first, but her career was also very important, and she worked until the age of 52, with the bulk of her final years spent at Clavet Composite School. Nancy had the unique capability to balance compassion, discipline and learning. Her students benefitted from this ability, and her most rewarding experiences were situations where she worked one-on-one with students. It was not just rewarding for her students but also for Nancy.
Nancy was also a mom. Mom nurtured when we needed nurturing, pushed us when we needed pushing and pointed us in the right direction when we strayed. And it was always done with love. As our family grew from the ‘original 6’ to include spouses and nine grand-children it was done with the strongest of foundations as we looked to create families as loving as the one we grew up in. Mom was also quick to remind each of us that our athletic ability was a direct result of her genes – thank you Mom.
Most importantly, Nancy was a wife, best-friend and life-long partner to her husband Ollie.
Friends come and go, children become less dependent with time and successful careers allowed Mom and Dad to retire in the early 2000’s. Their adventures did not end there. They saw the world through various trips, cruises and tours. They avoided harsh winters with extended time spent in Arizona, and Nancy (aka nana) never missed out on a milestone or big tournament for the nine grandchildren. Nancy – I love you.
Nancy was predeceased by her mother and father, her little brother Blair Golden and loving aunts and uncles. Nancy is survived by her loving husband of 44 years Ollie and her children, Lars (Shauna) and children (Alyx and Kennedy), Lisa (Russ) Sarauer and children (Elizabeth and Joel), Susan (Kevin) Dobson and children (Raya and Owen) and Todd (Janelle) and children (Evander, Laiken, Brielle). Nancy was the oldest of four siblings and is survived by Ronald Golden and Peggy (Jon) Golden-Geissler and by many nieces and nephews. Nancy, mom, nana – until we meet again, ta ta for now.
