Mary was predeceased by her parents, her sister Vi Harper and brothers John and Bill Cairns and by her devoted husband John Shadick, whom she married in Saskatoon in 1947. She grew up in Saskatoon and attended the University of Saskatchewan where she studied art and education. Mary loved teaching: beginning in a one-room school in 1935 she taught in various centers before returning to Saskatoon. She was a devoted mother and actively encouraged her childrens’ music and science pursuits. While raising her family she also taught kindergarten. She enjoyed painting landscapes and later worked with stained glass. She was a member of the UCW at Grace-Westminster United Church before retiring to Victoria where she sang in the choir at Gordon United Church.
