Marlene Gail Kiwaluk was born one cold day on February 12, 1949, in Benito, MB, to parents Phillip and Tena Kiwaluk. She was the third child of four born to Phillip and Tena. Her eldest brother, Phillip, sadly died close to 48 hours after birth. She is survived by her elder sister, Dolores, and younger brother, Donald. Her mother, Tena, was a homemaker; and her father, Phillip, was a general labourer.
Though she only completed grade 10, she enjoyed learning and had a passion to become a nurse. Around the age of 18 or 19, she moved to Regina, SK, where she eventually worked at Woolco. It was here she met Allan Cornel Miller. After a whirlwind relationship that lasted eight months, at the fine age of 22, she and Al were married on January 15, 1972. In August 1973, Marlene had her first child, Charlene. Thus, her life began as a mother. Cynthia was born three years later in 1976, followed by Crystal in 1977. Marlene juggled the life of motherhood, worked at a craft store and dabbled in real estate before moving to Saskatoon, SK, in 1983. Here she began working as a cook at the Saskatoon Airport where she diligently devoted 27 years of her life.
Marlene found great joy in gardening. Not only did she grow a vast number of vegetables, which she preserved, she also planted a variety of flowers that filled her yard with color. Many laughs were had over card games, word games and trivia games. Marlene found great joy in and devoted much love to her daughters Charlene (Harlan), Cynthia (Rob) and Crystal. Marlene was richly blessed with eight grandchildren whom she loved wholeheartedly. Her passion for cooking was seen in her home and at her job. She was known for her trifle and some of the best soups Saskatoon has ever known. Marlene did her fair share of traveling which included the Yukon, British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario, California, Montana and so forth.
Marlene had a love for God that eventually led her to Canadian Plains Baptist Church in Saskatoon. She was instrumental in instilling a love for God in her children. Marlene sang her heart out at church. She loved all hymns. Marlene enjoyed when her daughters played the piano and always had a request. She served happily and faithfully from 1993 until 2020 when she succumbed to her illness and other ailments that eventually caused a once happy, vibrant woman, to take her last breath on May 14, 2022. Marlene left a lasting impression on her family. Though we cry for her and will miss her more than can adequately be expressed, we also rejoice in the memories of our dearest mother. Nothing can ever replace a mother. Thank you for joining us today as we remember her.
