Dr. Lowell Loewen completed his earthly journey and began his new life in heaven March 23, 2023. There to greet him were his parents William and Margaret, his sister Eileen along with her husband Ross, brother Gerry, sister-in-law Sandra, and niece Debbie. He leaves behind his wife of 66 years Win; daughter Kim (Wayne) Hunter; son Michael; grandsons Jared (Alexis) Hunter and Rhett Hunter; granddaughter Emma (Dayton) Brown; brothers Richard (Loreen), Don (Louise), and Dennis (Reny); sister-in-law Glendyne along with other family members.
Lowell was born November 15, 1934, in Rosetown, SK and grew up in Herschel, SK. He attended the University of Saskatchewan and was a member of the first graduating class of the College of Medicine in 1957. Lowell practiced family medicine in Saskatoon for 22 years and then became Deputy Registrar for the College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1979. Lowell retired from the College in 1999 but continued to assist with several committees until 2017.
Lowell was involved in his community as a member of Rotary and served on the Saskatoon Public School Board, the Saskatoon Housing Authority, local and national boards of Youth for Christ, the board of the Canadian Center for Drug Free Sport, and in various capacities in the churches he attended. Along with being a certified doping control officer, Lowell was a certified pole vault official and officiated at the World Student Games and the Commonwealth Games.
The family cabin at Martin’s Lake was a special place. Lowell and Win were able to live there for ten years during their retirement. “Doc”, as he was known, was famous for having spare parts in his workshop which helped many a cabin owner make needed repairs.
Lowell was a kind and gentle man, yet firm in his beliefs and principles. He was sustained by a strong faith in his Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. He will be greatly missed. A celebration of his life will be held May 13, 2023, at 3:00 pm at Aspira Hunter Village, 250 Hunter Road, Saskatoon.
The family would like to thank Dr. Cyprian Enweani for the care and support provided to Lowell over many years. Sincere thanks also to the staff of Emergency, 6th Medicine, and the Palliative Care Unit at St. Paul’s Hospital for the wonderful care given to Lowell in his final days. Memorial donations can be made to Teen Challenge, the Palliative Care Unit, or a charity of the donor’s choice. Arrangements entrusted to Mourning Glory Funeral Services.
