Lois died on June 13th 2021 at St. Paul’s Hospital Saskatoon after a brave battle with recurrent breast cancer.
She was born in Melville in1952 and grew up in Swift Current and Regina before embarking on a career in nursing. Lois was ideally suited to this profession with her keen intellect and kind heart. After graduating, she worked in Regina and later in Winnipeg where she specialized in the care of children, in particular of those with heart problems. She obtained advanced degrees in Winnipeg and Toronto before becoming a nurse practitioner with the children’s heart program at the Stollery Children’s Hospital in Edmonton. There she blossomed and became a key person in the group who always knew what was going on and had the best interests of her small patients first and foremost. She retired after a distinguished 42 year career.
Lois travelled widely, to pursue professional projects in China, Japan and the Middle East and later to Australia, New Zealand and Africa. She brought back a host of memories to share with us.
Lois was predeceased by her parents, Doris and Fred Hawkins and brother Art Hawkins.
She is survived by her loving husband and best friend for nearly eight years, Michael Tyrrell, her sisters Pat (Bruce) and MaryEllen, brother Ralph (Enez) and her nieces and nephews.
The family thanks Drs Vivian Walker, Peter Kapusta, Colette Fournier, S. Ahmed and Donna Slobodzian and the staff of the palliative care unit for their sensitive and professional care.
There will be a memorial mass for Lois. Instead of flowers, please donate to one of Lois’s favorite charities; the Salvation Army or the Saskatoon Food Bank.
