Leonard was born to Elsie and Phillip Bertrand on a farm in Cut Knife, Saskatchewan on May 1, 1935. The oldest of two children. Leonard married Mae Biggart in 1957, they welcomed and raised two children Barry and Gloria. Mom and dad celebrated almost 65 years of marriage before mom’s passing in 2021.
When we think of dad, there are two things that come to mind immediately (besides his broad smile, mischievous glint in his eye and somewhat inappropriate sense of humour.)
The first was his love for anything mechanical that had moving parts. He was happiest when in his garage or fixing something that needed fixed. He was so proud to be an owner operator of Eastview Shell from 1979 to 1989. Dad always had an open garage door at either the Shell or home. Many hours were spent visiting anyone who dropped in for a chat and a cold beer. Dad shared many hours with Barry over this common bond right to the end.
I think the second thing is when we saw dad smile and come alive when the grandchildren and great grandchildren were born. He cherished his time with them in person or on phone calls. They were the light of his life.
Dad loved the trips he took with Mae. They were fortunate to have a few winters in Yuma. Every fall they would take car trips to the USA for their October 1st anniversary. On their last trip together, they celebrated their 60th anniversary in Palm Springs.
Dad is survived by his son Barry (Faye) Bertrand; daughter Gloria (Milt) Nickel; grandchildren Gregory and Lindsay Bertrand, Colton (Katelyn) and Tanner Nickel; great grandchildren, Ellie Marie and Maverick MJ Nickel; sisters-in-law Joyce Hewson, June Rothwell; and brother-in-law Ron Lee and extended family.
A Graveside Service at will be held at 1:00 p.m. on May 2, 2025 at Woodlawn Cemetery to celebrate Leonard’s life. We will meet after the service to fellowship and share memories of mom and dad at Windsor Chapel, 704 Windsor Street, Saskatoon. Dad would like everyone to raise his or her beverage of choice and tell a story that would make him smile.
Funeral arrangements entrusted to Shane Lilley with Mourning Glory Funeral Services, (306) 978-5200.
