May 2, 1949 - February 15, 2021
With his family surrounding him in love, Larry Raymond Bergren passed away peacefully at home on Monday, February 15, 2021 at age 71. Larry was a beloved husband, dad, grandpa, brother, uncle and friend who left us too quickly from cancer.
Born in Saskatoon, SK, Larry was a gentle man who was talented in so many ways. Not only could he fix and repair pretty much anything, he was also a skilled craftsman. He worked in many different occupations. In his early years, he was employed as a construction carpenter and as a letter carrier. He studied at Saskatchewan Polytechnic, first receiving his cabinet maker certification and eventually his journeyman carpenter designation. His work ranged from renovating his family homes and cabin, to constructing custom cabinets and works of art from wood. Eventually he shared his knowledge and skills by teaching carpentry, first at Gabriel Dumont Institute and finishing his teaching career at Saskatchewan Indian Institute of Technology.
Larry and his wife, Pat, moved from Saskatoon to the land near Medstead, SK where he was a self-employed carpenter and a tree planter, first working for Smokey Lake and then as a member of Raven's Hill tree planting cooperative. He finished his career in tree planting as an owner of Northern Reforestation. Larry and his family moved to Nipawin, SK where he established The Wood Shop cabinet and carpentry business. He and his family lived in Nipawin until returning to Saskatoon.
Larry loved to spend time at the family cabin on Lac La Ronge where, when he wasn't renovating the cabin, he was fishing, canoeing and picking wild mushrooms and blueberries. His love of blues, folk and bluegrass music led him to volunteer at the Ness Creek Music Festival and the Winnipeg Folk Festival.
Our Mr. Fix-it is gone but he will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 43 years, Pat Newton, sons Sol (Elise Normand), Robin (Vivian Wong) and daughter Alyssa (Jacob and Lily Tessman). He leaves behind his sisters Doreen Bruce and Karen (Howard) Nontell, brothers-in-law Jim Newton (Tammy Zajac) and Tom Newton, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Ray and Myrtle Bergren, sister Shirley Crockett, brother-in-law Jim Bruce and sister-in-law Linda Newton.
The family would like to thank Saskatoon Health Palliative Care, especially nurses Marilyn and Gail, who provided immediate and empathetic care, and Dr. Morris Markentin whose compassion and expertise was so appreciated. In lieu of flowers, please donate to a cause important to you, to those in need or to a charity of your choice. A life well lived is one to be remembered. When we can gather once again, we will honour Larrdog's (as Sol often called him) life. A celebration will be in order, as we all know how Larry loved to celebrate. Arrangements in care of Travis Minor – Mourning Glory Funeral Services (306) 978-5200.
