Jonathan “Jon” Sealy was born and raised in the Caribbean Island of Barbados and migrated to Canada in the late 1950’s. Following a career as a psychiatric nurse, Jon moved into the human services/community development field. Jon’s extensive professional career took him across Western Canada, including the Northwest Territories to British Columbia and Saskatchewan. Jon completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Regina in 1969; his graduate Social Work degree (MSW) at the University of British Columbia in 1972; and a Masters degree in Adult Education at the University of Saskatchewan in 1985.
Jon’s work with the First Nations University of Canada began under the Saskatchewan Indian Federated College (SIFC) in 1977. Jon developed strong relations with Indigenous communities across Western Canada through evaluations of child welfare programs as well as facilitating training workshops. His academic career included positions as lecturer and assistant professor; and later as Acting Department Head. Jon served as Associate Professor Social Work; and as Director of the School of Indian Social Work between 1996 and 2000 when he retired from the institution. Jon moved back to Barbados in 2002 and continued to maintain as active career in Social Work education by teaching at Barbados Community College and the Social Work program at the University of the West Indies (UWI). Jonathan and his wife Donna moved back to Saskatoon in 2023.
