The family is saddened to announce the passing of John Petrun. After declining health over the last few years, he peacefully took his last breath in St Paul’s hospital early in the morning on Nov 28, 2023.
John was born on June 29, 1938 on a farm near the river about 4 miles Southwest of Borden to Joseph and Teresa Petrun. A new little brother to Mary and Mike. Joseph, Teresa, Mary and Mike have all passed and a set of twin siblings that were born to the family died at birth.
John lived and worked on the homestead near Borden, going to school in the Saginaw district as well as Borden and eventually meeting and marrying Marilyn Wasylyshin in 1965. In 1966 they welcomed their first child Wayne, followed by Dale in 1970 and Kimberly in 1973. They lived on the homestead while starting to develop a yard site and renovate a house just a few miles north which is still the current home for Wayne. After working for several years on their new home, Marilyn was never able to enjoy the new house as her fight with breast cancer tragically ended in 1980. John and the kids eventually moved to the new yard site and house in the early 1980’s. The new yard site was set up with a barn to milk cows and sell cream, barns and corrals for beef cattle, chicken coop, an area for pigs and a large garden to keep the kids out of trouble.
John joined the CB radio craze in the 80’s talking to many ‘good buddies’ over the air waves and hitting the winter trails on the snow mobiles (I think the old snow mobile may still be tucked away in a shed). This group and other lifelong friends spent many evenings at each other’s houses socializing and playing cards as well as hitting the road to numerous towns to attend dances.
John eventually met and married Victoria in 1985. Vicki and her two boys moved to Borden and lived there for several years until their divorce. After a few more years, fate brought John and Eileen together and after living together on the farm and then together in Borden, they decided to tie the knot and were married in 2008. John retired from the farm and eventually they bought a house on Main Street in Borden.
John enjoyed the social aspect about being in town and the Seniors Center playing cards, having suppers and catching up with everyone. Eileen did a lot of baking for the Farmers Market with John assuming the role of head salesman, chief bs’er and procurement officer as he knew where all the good deals were in Saskatoon. Of course lugging all the procured goods did need some muscle to get them downstairs as the years went by and Wayne was always a call away.
John farmed all his life and in retirement went to help Wayne on the farm, sometimes as needed or more so as much as a retired guy wanted to do! He enjoyed having a garden on the farm and in town and as usual planted too much to make sure the kids, friends and neighbors always got some produce. He enjoyed attending the concerts, recitals and plays that the grand children were a part of.
John is survived by his wife Eileen, Wayne, Dale Tanya Josh Abbey and Kim Greg Katelyn Justin. John will be missed by all who knew him for his sense of humor, great card games and even better conversations.
A Funeral Service will be held Monday December 4, 2023 11:00 am at Mourning Glory-Acadia McKague's Funeral Chapel (915 Acadia Drive, Saskatoon, SK). Burial to follow at the Borden Community Cemetery.
