Jacqueline was born Jacqueline Lucille Paul-Hus in Trois-Rivières, Quebec, on September 9, 1928, and grew up near Saint-Léonard-d’Aston, Quebec. She spent several years working as a nurse in Montreal, where she met Léon Lamontagne, who was from Saskatchewan and was studying law at McGill. They married in 1952 and, though it is hard to believe it now, because of her marriage she was compelled by law to give up her job.
In 1956 they left Quebec with their first two children, Daniel and Raymond, and moved to Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, where Léon set up his law practice. When she was not busy bringing up their eight children, she helped him in his work for the Cooperative Commonwealth Federation (CCF), which has since been transformed into the NDP.
Léon died of a heart attack in March 1976, when their four older children were already at university, while the younger four were still at secondary school. Jacqueline spent the next ten years running a private nursing home for seniors. She then retired and, in 1989, she moved to Saskatoon. There she formed lasting friendships with her neighbours, and enjoyed gardening and socializing.
Jacqueline died in Saskatoon on May 1, 2022. She was predeceased not only by her husband, but also by her brothers Constant, Gérard and André, and her sisters Thérèse, Maria, Madeleine and Denise. She is survived by her eight children, Daniel, Raymond, Suzanne, Louise, Andrée, Monique, Manon and Sylvie, along with her ten grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
Jacqueline will be remembered with love by her family and friends. We wish to thank all those who assisted with her care in the closing years of her long life. May her memory be a blessing.
The interment will be held in private.
Two Sunday Masses will be dedicated in Jacqueline's memory on May 15 and May 22 at Saints Martyrs Canadiens both will be at 10:30 a.m.
