Gordon Wallace Madsen

Gordon was born in the Outlook area, Saskatchewan, on October 6, 1937. He began his schooling at a country school in Inverness, then to Broderick, and finally to Outlook to finish high school, at Lutheran Bible College Institute. After graduating, he went on to achieve his Teaching Certificate, and taught for a short time in a one room schoolhouse. After a couple of years, he moved to Saskatoon. There he met Shirley Bitz, at a curling bonspiel. They went on to wed in 1961 and were married for more than 48 years.

Gordon worked most of his career for the Federal Government, starting with Revenue Canada and retiring in 1988 from Old Age Security. His work colleagues were like family to him, sharing many barbecues, birthday celebrations and Friday drinks after work, well, because it was Friday!

Sports were always a focal point throughout his life. As a young man he spent countless hours at the curling rink and on the ballfield. His passion was hockey, which he continued to play well into his fifties, when he was diagnosed with ALS. As a member of the Oldpaw’s, Gordon took part in many tournaments throughout Western Canada and even traveled to Finland, Russia and Sweden with the Team.

Gordon's love of sport went beyond the rink. He coached both of his kids throughout their youth whether Troy’s hockey or Tracy’s ball, he was there, on the bench or in the stands - always!

Retirement allowed Gordon and Shirley to spend time with their kids and grandchildren. They also took up winter residence in Mesa, Arizona, in the company of old and new friends. Happy Hour was their favorite time of day! We would be remiss if we did not acknowledge that this was a drawing card for their immediate family too. After Shirley’s passing, Gordon continued to winter there - independently.

Gordon is survived by his son Troy (Liesly), children: August (Joshua), Brooke, Elijah (Bella) and Justus. Daughter Tracy (Randall), children: Cole and Carly, brother Eldon (Marlene, sister-in-law Darlene (Blaine), brother-in-law Brian, numerous nieces, nephews and Clarice, a special cousin to Gordon.

Gordon lived with ALS for 35 years. He never let this get in his way, as he chased the best life had to offer. Dad’s cheeky demeanor and good-natured personality endeared him to all he crossed paths with, and there were many! We are blessed to have had him for as long as we did! Take that ALS!

His Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 28th, 2023 at Sherbrooke Community Center (401 Acadia Drive, Saskatoon).
