October 19, 1956 – April 19, 2011
It is with profound sadness that we announce the loss of Barbara Bauer at the age of 54. Barb passed away peacefully Tuesday, April 19, 2011 surrounded by her family and in the comfort of her home. She was predeceased by her parents Bill and Bernice Mitchell. She is survived by Bruce her husband of 29 years, her three children, Michael (Alison), Katie, and Jennifer, and her siblings Susan Mitchell (Stephen, Janelle), Tracy Clark and husband Del (Jeff, Kristi, Kevin, Brian, Robbie, Emily), Rob Mitchell and wife Candace (Laurie, Matt), and brother Doug Mitchell.
Barb’s three favorite things in life were family, food, and travel (in that order!). She was a great mother: her love and devotion to her family knew no bounds, and she was always supportive, thoughtful and kind.
The oldest of five siblings, Barb grew up in Toronto, and moved with her family to Saskatoon as a teenager. She obtained both her BA Honours and an MBA at the University of Saskatchewan, and married Bruce in the spring of 1982. Soon after, they had three children together, and Barb spent much of her limitless energy raising them. From grade school projects, to organizing high school after-grads, to helping them move into their first apartment, she always put her children first.
Barb spent countless hours planning family vacations, and took her family on exciting trips to destinations around the world, including: Australia, New Zealand, London, Paris, Mexico and New York. With each day of these vacations planned almost to the minute, we always returned exhausted, and with lots of great memories.
Her generosity and hospitality were unmatched, and she especially never missed an opportunity to spoil her children, or donate her time and energy to friends and family.
Barb made an impact on many people’s lives: she could always put a smile on your face, and her attitude towards life was beautifully simple: do what makes you happy and be good to the people you love. She never hesitated to challenge herself, and would always surprise you with her adventurous spirit.
While she was already an accomplished cook, at the age of 50 Barb enrolled at the French Culinary Institute in New York City to follow dream of becoming a professional chef. After moving to Manhattan with Bruce, she graduated at the top of her class and had the opportunity to meet some of her culinary heroes and work at Jean Georges’ Mercer Kitchen in SoHo.
We love you and miss you dearly Barb, you’ll be in our thoughts and our hearts forever. In lieu of flowers, the family appreciates donations be made to The Saskatoon Cancer Centre – 20 Campus Drive, Saskatoon, SK S7N 4H4 306-655-2662.
