It is with great sadness and a heavy heart the family of Alan (Al) Herman Schmidt wish to announce his passing. After bravely coping with prolonged illness for many years, Alan passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 8th, 2014 at St. Paul’s Hospital, surrounded by his family. Alan is survived by his loving wife Doreen (nee Borne), his sister Dawn (John) Hiebert, his children Leigh Ann (Kirk) Hurlburt, Greg (Teresa) Schmidt, and Warren (Shannon) Schmidt, and his 8 grandchildren Ryan, Ken, Levi, Kalyn, Emma, Sawyer, Ava, and Ethan. Alan is predeceased by his son, Deen Schmidt. Alan was the eldest of two children, born on December 12th, 1937 to Gib and Rita Schmidt. Alan grew up on a farm south of Saskatoon, where he developed a love of the land and farming that would remain with him throughout his life. Alan attended the University of Saskatchewan where he received a Diploma in Agriculture in 1957. Upon the retirement of his father, Alan and his young family took over the family farm in 1973, working for many years until retiring in the early 2000s. Whether working on the farm, or looking on in retirement, Alan always enjoyed discussing the crops, the weather, and the many challenges of farming. Alan enjoyed other endeavors as well. He distinctly enjoyed the freedom of the open road, driving a semi truck for many years, including a few long-haul adventures through the southern US and Alaska. He also followed in his father’s footsteps, serving as a member of the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation in the 1960s and 70s. He is very fondly remembered for his appreciation for cards and the game of cribbage. Big Al, as his children affectionately referred to him, thoroughly enjoyed the finer points of that game, and besting his children and grandchildren whenever possible. They can still hear him asking whether they want those extra points he always saw left on the board. A Celebration of Alan’s Life will be held on Thursday, June 12th, 2014 at Windsor Chapel, 704 Windsor Street, in Saskatoon with Rev. Daryl Woods presiding. (Wheelchair accessible) Interment will take place at Woodlawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Paul’s Hospital Foundation, at 1702 20th Street West, Saskatoon, SK.
