Agnes Deschuck passed away peacefully on December 19, 2024 at St. Paul’s Palliative Care in the loving presence of her daughters, Shelly Amberson and Lori Paslawski. Having recently celebrated her 80th birthday surrounded by family and friends, this sudden ending came far too soon for someone as full of life as Agnes had always been.
Agnes grew up in Allan, Saskatchewan, the seventh child of nine born to Christian and Julia Senger. Agnes’ formative years on the farm provided many entertaining stories for her children and grandchildren and molded her into the family oriented and fun-loving person she was.
Agnes was predeceased by her parents Christian and Julia, and siblings Leona, Elmer, Eugene, Magdelena, and Arnie, as well as her loving husband Wally. Agnes is survived by her daughter Shelly and her children Carson and Breanne, and her daughter Lori (Mark) and their sons Cole and Sam; as well as her siblings Edward (Andelina), Ronnie (Elsie) and Rhea (Carl).
Agnes met Wally while waiting tables at Cody’s Café in Allan. They married in 1965, and after Agnes gave birth to Shelly in Allan they moved to Saskatoon, where Lori was born. Wally and Agnes loved spending time with family and friends. Her fun-loving personality, kind heart and genuine interest in others were exemplified in her daily life in the way she made those around her feel welcomed, supported and loved. The door was always open to host, and the table was always laden with home-cooked meals. Her specialties included perogies, cabbage rolls and meatballs.
Agnes worked at St. Anne’s Nursing Home as a hairdresser for many years. She was a natural caregiver, with her patience and kindness on display at work, with family and friends, and with anyone she met, as she was always looking for opportunities to help with anything that was needed. Agnes’ grandchildren brought her great joy and played a special role in her life. The feeling was mutual, and they all cherish their memories of time with Grandma.
Agnes enjoyed life to its fullest. No birthday was complete without one of her homemade cards, and no party was over until she had delivered a round of China Whites! Agnes loved to have fun, share a laugh, and was no stranger to wearing silly hats or donning a costume to liven the party. Playing cards, camping, enjoying a fire with “her man” Wally, dancing, singing, and taking walks were all things that Agnes loved to do.
Agnes handled her diagnosis with dignity and class, and true to her character spent more time focused on others than herself, serving as an inspiration to many. Although we lost her too soon, she will always be remembered fondly for her positive energy, willingness to roll up her sleeves to help others and her engaging personality which left such an outsized imprint on everyone who knew her. Our lives were all better for having had Agnes part of it.
We would like to extend a special thanks to the doctors, nurses and staff at the Cancer Clinic and St. Paul’s Palliative Care Unit for their kindness and compassion through her journey. In accordance with Agnes’ wishes, a Graveside Funeral Service will be planned in the Spring. More details regarding this celebration of life will be made available on Mourning Glory Funeral Services’ website. Should family or friends so desire, donations in memory of Agnes may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or to the St. Paul’s Hospital Foundation.
Arrangements in care of Kyle Werminsky.
