William R. Hayman, Jr. (Bill), age 69, of Sarasota, Florida and formerly of New Smyrna Beach, Florida, passed away on March 6, 2015 at his home. His family was in attendance. Bill was born October 24, 1945 in Daytona Beach, Florida. He was a Baptist. He graduated from Live Oak High School in New Smyrna Beach where he lettered in football and baseball. He was a lifeguard in Volusia County. He received his BA in History from the University of Florida and his Master’s in Education from the National-Louis University. For the last 22 years Bill taught Exceptional Student Education at Oak Park School in Sarasota. During that time he never missed a day of work. He loved his students and they loved him. He was named Teacher of the Year at Oak Park School in 2003-2004. Prior to teaching Bill owned and operated the Mr. Gattis restaurant in Sarasota. Bill was an avid golfer and he loved to fish and hunt. He spent many hours working in his yard with many exotic plants. He joined the Manasota Track Club in the early 1980’s and became a good distance runner, completing several marathons. He participated in all aspects of the running club, and in 1999 was awarded its highest honor, the Tingle-Petz award, for service to the club and the community. Bill will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him, especially his students and his special family of friends.
