Bob was a veteran of WWII, serving as a U.S. Marine in an air ground liaison unit stationed in the Aleutian Islands. After the war, Bob worked in the management department of Illinois Bell Telephone Co. for 37 years.
Bob was born Feb 7, 1923 in Chicago, IL to Mildred and Alexander Johnson. He graduated from Fenwick High School and the University of Illinois. Bob was the Commodore of the Burnham Park Yacht Club from 1982-1983. After moving to Sarasota, Bob was very active as a founding member of St Patrick’s Catholic Church, the Sarasota Power Squadron, a volunteer at Doctors Hospital, and with the Knights of Columbus.
Bob was preceded in death by the love of his life, his wife of 60 years, Mary Jane; his parents, Mildred and Alexander Johnson; his sisters, Arline J. (Len) Gargas and Delores (George) Rumachik; and his nephew, Robert (Dene) Rumachik.
He is survived by his nephews, Gregory W. Casserly, Jeffry R. Bartell, George Rumachik and Terrance (Monica) Rumachik; his nieces, Delores (Bob) Korby, Jannice (John) Mazeikis and Suellyn Rumachik; and many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.
Bob had a great sense of humor and loved people. He was blessed to have many, many friends and his smile will be greatly missed by all.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Palms-Robarts Funeral Home in Sarasota, FL.
A Celebration of Life Mass will be held Monday, October 8, 2012 at 11am at St Patrick’s Catholic Church, 7900 Bee Ridge Rd, Sarasota, FL 34241.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Bob’s name to St Patrick’s Catholic Church, the Sarasota Power Squadron Capital Fund at 2814 Hyde Park St, Sarasota, FL 34239 or a charity of your choice.
