Naomi Hicks was born in Tallevast, Florida, on January 25, 1926, to Bias and Lala
Mumford, while on their way to Sarasota.
She attended public school in LaBelle and Sebring, Florida, graduating as Valedictorian
from E.O. Douglas High School in 1944. She went on to attend Florida A&M University,
where she graduated in 1948 with honors and a B.A in Home Economics.
She moved to Sarasota where she met and married Theotis Frank Hicks, and to that union
four children were born: Karen, Brenda, Cornelius and Theada. Naomi was the first
Black hired by Florida Power & Light, where she served as a cashier, internal auditor and
customer service supervisor. She retired in 1988, enjoying retirement by trips, cruises
and the company of her family. She was a faithful member of True Vine Missionary
Baptist Church for over 40 years.
She is survived by her children; Karen D. King, Brenda D. Williams, Cornelius (Diane)
Hicks and Theada D. (James) McDowell. Grandchildren; Michelle Wilson Bickford,
Shayla King, Kevin (Krisheena) King, Brian Williams, Angela (Charlie) Bond, Cornelius
Tyrone Hicks, Jr., Amaad (Talyna) Hicks, (Candace (Joey) Robinson, and Jarred
McDowell; 17 great-grandchildren; several uncles, aunts, cousins and many sorrowful
friends, and a devoted caregiver, Yvonne Storey.
The viewing will be at True Vine Missionary Baptist Church on April 29, 2011, from 4 -
6 PM. The funeral service will be held on April 30, 2011, at 11:00 AM, at True Vine and
burial will be in Palms Memorial Park.
