Nancy Storey White, 85, passed away peacefully on January 13, 2015 in Sarasota, Florida. Born in Columbus, Georgia, February 19, 1929 to Frederick George Storey and Winifred Bailey Storey, Nancy was preceded in death by her husband Marion Edward White in 1999 and a son David Storey White in 2013. Nancy grew up in Columbus and attended Columbus High School. She graduated from Sweet Briar College, Lynchburg, Virginia, with a degree in English, and then returned to Columbus where she worked in education and journalism before marrying in 1952. She and her family moved to Sarasota in 1959, and lived for over 40 years in the same home in the Sapphire Shores neighborhood. In Sarasota, Nancy taught Language Arts and English for many years at Bay Haven Elementary School and Booker High School. She touched many young minds and could not go anywhere in town without meeting a former student. She also served as a volunteer at Sarasota Memorial Hospital, the Ringling Museum of Art, the Sarasota Public Library, and other local institutions. After retirement, she travelled extensively with her husband and attended study abroad programs at Merton College, Oxford, The University of Edinburgh, and The University of Cambridge. In 2001, she moved to Plymouth Harbor on Sarasota Bay, where she was surrounded by lifetime friends from the community. Nancy was a lifetime member of the Junior League and the Funeral Consumers Alliance of Sarasota. Nancy is survived by her three children, Marian White Sawyer of Fort Collins, Colorado, Christopher Ferrandou White, Colonel, USA, (Ret.) of Sarasota, Frederick deGruy White of Boston, Massachusetts, and seven grandchildren. Memorial services will be held at St. Martha’s Catholic Church in Sarasota on Thursday, January 29th, at 10 a.m. and at Holy Family Catholic Church in Columbus on Saturday, January 31st, at 10 a.m. Interment will be at Riverdale Cemetery in Columbus.
