Medora (Dodie) Byrn Dashiell, wife of the late Hamilton Lee Dashiell, passed away on September 25, 2023. She was born in York, PA, on March 29,1924, the daughter of the late Samuel Lambert and Evelyn Mantz Byrn. She was predeceased by her husband of 56 years, her sister Beverly Davis Simons, and her brother Samuel Lambert Byrn III, and survived by her four children: Medora Dashiell Sheehan (Peter '07) of Sarasota, Hamilton Lee Dashiell Jr.(Marilou) of San Francisco, CA, Samuel Mitchell Dashiell (Leslie) of Palm Beach, FL, and Lee Mantz Dashiell (Lisa) of Splitters Creek NSW, Australia, six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren: David Sheehan, Medora Sheehan Helminski (Mason and Caroline), Caroline Dashiell Dean (Davis, Mitchell, Foster, and Dash), Samuel Dashiell Jr., Madeleine Dashiell, and Louis Dashiell.
Dodie attended the U. of MD, where she was a KKG pledge and the sweetheart of Sigma Chi, until she served in the Waves (Navy) during World War II, in Intelligence and Communications, decoding German messages in Washington DC for two years. Dodie then attended the Catherine Gibbs School in Providence, Rhode Island. Upon graduation, she worked for B. Altman's son as his executive assistant.
Marrying "Ham" Dashiell in 1944, she moved back to her hometown of Cambridge, MD. She ran the Girl Scouts in Dorchester Co., and was active in the Historical Society, the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Hospital Auxiliary, Christ Episcopal Church, Cambridge Country Club, and Cambridge Yacht Club, where her father Samuel L Byrn, II, was the 3rd Commodore. She owned and operated a garden shop called "Spring Fever." She enjoyed decorating many homes over the years, and was a superb hostess for many gatherings for family and friends.
Upon retirement, Dodie and Ham moved to Longboat Key in Sarasota, Florida, where they became very involved. She supported Ham in his role as Vice Mayor of Longboat Key, played tennis five times a week at Longboat Key Club, continued actively playing bridge, was an enthusiastic boater, planner of many trips around the world, and loved family genealogy.
They moved to Plymouth Harbor in Sarasota in 1992, and joined Bird Key Yacht Club where they were very active boating & playing tennis.
Her family has resided in Cambridge, MD for over 200 years. Interment will be later at Old Trinity Episcopal Church, Church Creek, MD, where her husband, Hamilton, is buried. Memorial donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
