Mary Ann Mason departed this world on March 27, 2024, in Sarasota, Florida. She lived 103 years filled with devotion to family and friends. She was born on September 28, 1920, in Spelter, West Virginia, to Antonio and Vicenta Cueto, who emigrated through Ellis Island from Asturias, Spain. Her older sister, Julia and younger brother, Tony predeceased her.
In 1945, Mary married the love of her life, Joseph “Joe” Mason with whom she shared 75 years of mutual devotion. They shared a love for dancing in their courtship and throughout their later years.
Mary, known as “Mama” to her grandchildren and great grandchildren, loved to bake and expressed her love and care for her family and friends with her amazing creations. She was known everywhere for her fabulous cupcakes and beautiful coconut cakes, that were enjoyed by all. In her hometown of Shinnston, West Virginia, she became famous for her assortment of Christmas cookies that were given to friends and neighbors all over town. Mary enjoyed gardening and was known for her rose garden and beautiful tulips.
After retirement, she and her husband moved to Florida where they cherished their time with grandchildren and enjoyed golf and socializing at El Conquistador Country Club.
Mary was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and loyal friend. She was thoughtful, kind, and loving to everyone who knew her.
Mary is survived by her daughter, Tammy Schieb (Scott) of Sarasota, FL; grandchildren, Brooke Schieb Waldrep (Kevin) of Dallas TX, and Michael Joseph Schieb of San Antonio, TX; and her great grandchildren, James, Thomas and Mary Margaret Waldrep of Dallas, TX.
Mary was preceded in death and now joyfully reunited with husband, Joseph Mason; son, James Lee Mason; and granddaughter, Lindsay Anne Schieb.
A memorial service celebrating Mary’s life will be held at 11:00 am on May 18 at Robert Toale and Sons funeral Home at Palms Memorial Park, 170 Honore Ave, Sarasota, FL.
