She was born Sept 4, 1921 in Fayetteville, NC to Morgan and Lyla Dawes. She retired from the U.S. Department of Interior as an Administrative Assistant in the Bureau of Mines. Her government service from 1947-197 included the Department of State, O.S.S. Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission, Bureau of Mines, Indian Affairs, primarily being with the Department of Meatelogical Research and Department Coal Mine Health and Safety. At one time, she served under one or more notable physicists who were part of developing the atom bomb. She was involved with New Horizons Club, Sarasota Doll Clubs and Prince Georges County, MD Civic Orchestra. She was a member of St Paul Lutheran Church in Sarasota, Sarah Coventry Jewelry, Beeline Fashions, and Mothers Club in Hyattsville, MD. Marjorie was a survivor of childhood rheumatic fever, ruptured appendix and over 30 total lifetime surgeries. She raised two children as a single mother. In her post-WWII years, she was a freelance writer and dreamed of a dancing and modeling career.
She is preceded in death by her father, Morgan J. Dawes; mother, Lyla M. Dawes; sister, Frances Garrison; brother, M. James Dawes; daughter, Kathleen A. Buete; and husband, Frank E. Tate. Marjorie is survived by her son, Brian Lawrence McCulley; grandchildren, Dr Eric and Maura Buete and Gregory and Sherri Buete; great-grandchildren, Kevin, Lauren, Rebecca, Christine and John Paul Buete; niece, Stephanie Sandy of MS; and nephews, Randall and Steve Dawes of MD.
Burial will be Sat, Oct 6th at 3pm at Palms-Robarts Memorial Park followed by a Celebration of Marjorie’s Life at St Paul Lutheran Church at 7pm.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Marjorie’s name to the Dr Ernest French Scholarship Fund at St Paul Lutheran Church.
