Joshua David Goldis, Yitzack Dovid Ben Avram Yosef v'Mindel Yisraela, 49 years old, was born in Long Island, New York on Halloween in 1972. Joshua passed peacefully in his home in Sarasota, Florida on March 9, 2022 surrounded by loved ones.
Josh is survived by his significant other Stephanie Wecht, father Allen (JoAnne) Goldis, brother Eric (Tamara) Goldis, Aunt Shelly Springer, his best friend & brother Dave (Sarah) Jordan, nephew Micah & niece Layla Rose Goldis; as well as those who called him Uncle Josh: Savannah and Cal David Jordan, Paige and Olivia Jordan, and great-niece Mila.
Josh is preceded in death by his beautiful mother Marlene Ina Goldis. The untimely loss of his mother when he was only 9 years old was an important part of who Josh Goldis was.
Josh is also preceded in death by his maternal grandparents Esther and Ed "Pop" Greenfield; paternal grandparents Dorothy 'Bubba' and Samuel 'Zaida' Goldis; and Uncle Marty Springer.
Josh lived and attended school in Queens, NY until he moved to Sarasota during his high school years where he resided until he went to college in Gainsville at the University of Florida. He received his Bachelor in Arts in 1994. From there, Josh moved on to Valparaiso University School of Law where he received his Juris Doctor degree. Josh joined a firm in St. Petersburg in 2002. Having previously worked in probate and estate planning, he established his career at the firm as a civil litigation attorney, eventually becoming partner in 2009 of ‘Brasfield, Freeman, Goldis and Cash’.
Josh had many talents and hobbies but running was the activity that most defined Josh. He ran numerous marathons in many different cities and states; and had many stories about each & every one of them. Josh was also very convicted in his Judaism, kept a kosher diet and often talked about and taught these things to his friends.
In March of 2018, Josh's life was drastically changed when he was diagnosed with stage 4 brain cancer. In true Josh fashion, he took the diagnosis in stride and rarely complained about the major changes he was forced to deal with in his life including retiring his career and living a very regimented schedule of medication and brain MRIs in order to try to beat the cancer. Josh was a fighter; he continued running and exercising, eating well, and fought extremely hard for 4 years. He was always an amazing patient, often making friends with his doctors and nurses, he came in with a big smile and asked how they were. Josh never wanted to be defined by cancer, and he made sure of that up until the very end.
He lived the last 4 years with happiness and grace. He went on a cruise to the Caribbean, ziplined through the rain forest in St. Lucia, saw his favorite band O.A.R. at Red Rocks, visited Blue Ridge Mountains for his best friend's birthday and most importantly, spent time with the people who mattered to him most.
Anyone who knew Josh knows what an amazing person he was throughout his entire life. He has been described as a Protector, a great friend, an ambassador of people; kind, caring, charitable, good. He made friends everywhere he went. He had a certain light and joy about him that is not common, an ability to speak to people and make them feel comfortable. He didn't care (or notice) if you were wearing suit or sweatpants. That was Josh. He was truly one of a kind.
If you were a part of his family or circle of friends, you will always carry Josh's spirit and courage; he left that for you because that is the type of person Josh was. He gave entirely more than he took. We were all luckier having known Josh Goldis. He made us better, he made us brighter.
The world will look a little different without Josh. We were blessed by his presence and friendship, his loyalty and kindness. But we now carry him with us in our hearts.
Services will be led by Rabbi Shefrin on Sunday, March 13, 2022 at 9am located at Toale and Sons Funeral Home at Palms Memorial Park, 170 Honore Ave; followed by graveside service at Temple Beth Sholom, 801 Circus Blvd. Sarasota.
In lieu of flowers, Josh would love if you donated to ASPCA, St. Jude’s Hospital or to the Marlene Ina Goldis Endowment through Stony Brook University at https://www.stonybrook.edu/ Under the "Giving to SBU" tab.
