He enjoyed early childhood in Clinton, IL, prior to the family’s move to Winnetka, IL. Following his 1963 graduation from North Shore Country Day School, John earned an Economics degree from Tulane University. John began his career with Owens-IL in New Orleans, retiring as manager of finance, sales and shipping from the Godfrey, IL plant.
While John served the Alton community both on the Zoning Commission and the Board of Altonized Community Federal Credit Union, it is his personal qualities which will be most remembered. John was kind and compassionate. His megawatt smile, wacky humor and enthusiasm for life never failed to bring laughter to his friends and family.
He and wife Linda (nee Elam) shared 33 great years; she survives. John was a devoted father to William of Webster Groves, MO; Rebecca Callander (Tim Liddy) of Kirkwood, MO; and Matthew (Sarah) of Sudbury, MA. John exhibited grace and resilience during his 13 years of living with Alzheimer’s. Grandchildren Mikaela, Winston, Claire, John and Sam played with Grandpa on the beach and read him stories. John leaves 3 dear sisters: Sally Callander of Chicago, IL; Clay Callander of St. Paul, MN; and Sean (Donald) McIntosh of Lexington, MA.
Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 10, at Weber-Rodney Funeral Home, Edwardsville, IL, with a celebration of John’s life immediately following. All are welcome.
Suggested memorials, for those who wish, include the Alzheimer’s Association, Tidewell Hospice of Bradenton, B.I.G. Love Cancer Care, or the Madison County Humane Society. Condolences may be shared at www.nationalcremation.com/sarasota/obituaries.
