Joan C. Newman, 80, of Nokomis, Florida, passed on to glory and went home to be with the Lord on March 22, 2018. Joan was born in Sandstone, MN and was always very active from a young age. She participated in the church choir and loved to play many sports and was an excellent swimmer. Joan was always a helpful and caring person at an early stage of her life. She and Bill met at the University of Minnesota, and were married on September 29, 1956 and relocated to Barberton, OH. Joan and Bill eventually relocated to Pittsburgh and New Jersey before returning to Pittsburgh in 1981. She was a loving wife and mother who started a successful real estate career later in life in New Jersey before relocating to Pittsburgh where she continued in real estate until she retired. Joan especially enjoyed traveling the world with Bill for many years. She was also very active at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Venice, and always looked forward to Sunday services, especially singing the hymns. While at home in Florida, Joan was a regular at Mission Valley Country Club playing golf, bridge with friends regularly from Calusa Lakes and Mission Valley, and enjoying fellowship with many of her close friends. While relaxing at home Joan enjoyed gardening and watching sports on television, especially golf. She always looked forward to the theater, eating out in Sarasota and Venice, walking, riding bikes, and visiting her grandchildren in the summer months, followed by winter visits from the grandchildren to which she always looked forward. Visiting the beach on a regular basis, and going to the jetty in the evening for sunsets was always a favorite activity for Joan. Her wonderful laugh and great sense of humor will be sadly missed. She is survived by her loving husband of 61 years Bill Newman, two children Bill Newman of New Jersey, Bryan Newman, and wife Sandy, of Pittsburgh, and five grandchildren Will, Chase, and Harrison from New Jersey and Hannah and James from Pittsburgh. She is also survived by her older brother Charles Pearson of Cincinnati, and niece and nephews Debbie, David, and Stephen. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. A memorial service is being planned for April. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
