Donald Allan Poland, 65, of Sarasota peacefully passed surrounded by family in his home on Monday, September 11, 2023. Don was born October 2, 1957 in Baltimore, MD to the late Donald, Sr. and Bonnie Poland.
Surviving him, a testament to his enduring impact, is his beloved wife Diane Poland, children; Michele Dalton (Shaun), Keith Hanson (Katie), Tara, Becky and DJ. His legacy extends through the bright smiles of his adored grandchildren: Abrianna, SJ, Lucas Dylan and Maddie, as well as siblings; Donna Jones (Tom) and Debbie Byrnes (Mike).
Don's educational journey was one of dedication and ambition. He proudly walked the halls of Allegheny High School, graduating in 1975. His thirst for knowledge led him to Purdue University, where he embarked on a journey of higher education from 1975 to 1976. His leadership ability was undeniable, having served as Class President during his junior and senior years of high school and as an active member of the Phi Kappa Theta fraternity during his collegiate years. He continued to ascend academic peaks, culminating in his graduation from the University of Pittsburgh in 1979. In 1992, he reached another pinnacle, earning an MBA from University of Chicago.
For 23 dedicated years, Donald contributed his talents to General Electric. Subsequently, he assumed the role of President at SKF North America, where he served with distinction for a decade. His professional acumen was complemented by his remarkable intelligence, eloquence, extensive travel experiences, and a delightful sense of humor. Yet, despite his achievements, Donald remained remarkably humble and approachable.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Don possessed a childlike wonder, an enduring love for chocolate, and a passion for collecting Matchbox and Hot Wheels. His collection extended to his "big boy toys," his cherished automobiles, which he traded in for a new model every single year. Don was an embodiment of generosity in every role he played – as a loving spouse, a devoted brother, a caring father, and a cherished friend. His spirit of giving was so profound that even in his passing, he left an indelible mark by selflessly donating his brain to aid future MSA patients and their families. This heartfelt gesture was his final wish, ensuring that his memory will endure eternally as a symbol of compassion and selflessness.
In tribute to Donald's memory, the family graciously requests that, in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the MSA Coalition INC. at 1660 International Dr., Suite 600, McLean, VA 22102. In doing so, his legacy of generosity and compassion lives on, reflecting the indomitable spirit of a life well-lived.
