A memorial service will be held 11:30 a.m. Friday at Palms-Robarts Funeral Home.
The family will receive friends from 10:30-11:30 a.m., Friday at the funeral home.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Jeannie; daughters, Martha Victor, Meg and husband Tim O'Gara, Kim and husband Doug White, Kristen and husband Nick Evanoff; "Papa” to Brenden, Wood, Riley, Alex and Max.
Don loved first and foremost his family. His wife Jeannie, his four daughters, Martha, Meg,
Kim and Kristen. And how excited he was to have grandsons. Wow, he never expected 5
grandsons; Brenden, Wood, Riley, Alex and Max. And we can't go without mentioning his
favorite little four-legged pal Gus.
Don loved his life in the navy. Don was a lieutenant commander in the United States Navy
from 1955 to 1958, serving on the USS WASP carrier. Don graduated from Rollins College
in 1954 and received his MBA in marketing from Northwestern University in 1959. Don's
whole career was in advertising.
Don was former director of the Chicago Advertising Federation and the American Institute
of Food and Wine. He also served on the American Bar Association's Commission on Public
Understanding About The Law. Don's civic involvement has included work with the Boy
Scouts of America, March of Dimes, and the American Cancer Society as Board Chairman
for the Chicago Area. He served on the Executive Committee of the American Cancer
Society, Illinois Division Board where he was Chairman of the statewide Communication
Committee.
Don was also a great athlete. He proudly proclaimed that between driving school busses,
raising the school flag each morning, his crew and basketball scholarships he was able to
go through Rollins without using any of his fathers money.
He excelled in crew winning national and international awards. Don was also an avid golfer
and had two holes in one in his lifetime. His golf buddies are amongst his best friends.
Once again Don treasured his friends and family more than anything. His last wishes were
for a small gathering of friends and family to reminisce about the good times. We his
family thank you all for sharing this time with us.
Don and Jeannie loved their music. Especially spiritual music. When you listen to his three
favorite songs sing along and reflect on the goodness of his life.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Tidewell hopsice, Inc. or St. Thomas More Catholic Church.
