Born on December 17, 1945 in Clinton, Iowa. Dan's life was marked by remarkable achievements, selfless service, and a genuine spirit that touched the lives of many.
Dan's educational journey began at the United States Military Academy at West Point, where he cultivated the values of duty, honor, country that would guide him throughout his life. He furthered his knowledge and skills by obtaining a Masters degree in Computer Science from Penn State University, solidifying his expertise in his chosen field.
Dan lived in Texas and Alaska early in his marriage with Maureen. They lived in North Attleboro, Massachusetts for many years raising his family. Dan and Maureen later moved to Sarasota which became their beloved home, where they crafted a life filled with love, joy, and cherished memories. For an incredible 55 years, he was the devoted and loving husband of Maureen Powell. Their union, formed on June 8, 1968, served as a beacon of strength, support, and unwavering commitment. Together, they faced life's joys and challenges, building a foundation of love, trust, and shared dreams.
Dan was a loving father to his children and grandchildren, Jeff Powell and daughter Ruby, along with her mother Kim of New York; Mark Powell and his wife Alice of Nevada, their daughter Emily of California, and their son Aedin of Oregon; and Dave Powell and his wife Mayumi and their son Kai of Tokyo, Japan; his brothers Lance Powell of Gardnerville, Nevada, John Powell of Portland, Maine; brothers in law, John Donley (Patricia, deceased) of Lakewood Ranch, Florida and Ronald Donley (Dr. Karen) of Palm Springs, California; niece, Colleen Reed (David) of Lakewood Ranch, Florida, as well as several other nieces and nephews.
He was a source of guidance, wisdom, and unwavering support, instilling in his children and grandchildren the values of compassion, resilience, and the pursuit of their dreams. Dan took great pride in his children's accomplishments and celebrated their milestones with boundless love and admiration.
During his childhood, Dan had the unique experience of living in various countries across Europe, accompanying his late father, Colonel Ross Powell, during his military assignments. These formative years shaped his worldview, fostering a deep appreciation for diversity, cultural understanding, and global perspectives.
Dan's love for his country led him to serve in the Army with honor and distinction. Stationed at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas, and Fort Richardson, Alaska, where he was Battery Commander of a Nike Hercules site. Dan also bravely served during the Vietnam War, demonstrating his courage and dedication to the principles he held dear. For his exceptional service, he was awarded the prestigious Bronze Star, a testament to his selflessness and bravery.
Professionally, Dan excelled as a DevOps engineer, utilizing his technical expertise and analytical mind to make a lasting impact in his field. He contributed to the success of organizations, including his most recent role at SAIC, where his skills and dedication were highly valued.
Beyond his professional endeavors, Dan found solace and inspiration in nature. He enjoyed spending time outdoors, appreciating the beauty of the world around him, through activities such as going to the beach and enjoying all that Florida has to offer.
Dan will be deeply missed by his beloved wife, Maureen, as well as his sons, and their families. His memory will forever live on in the hearts of those who were touched by his kindness, strength, and unwavering love.
A military service to honor Dan's life will be held on May 31, 2023, at the Sarasota National Cemetery in Sarasota, Florida.
Memorial donations in lieu of flowers may be made to Wounded Warriors Project, Dan's favorite charity.
