He was born to Arthur Gilliam Tucker, Jr. and Margaret Robertson Tucker in Richmond, Virginia, attended public schools of Lynchburg, Virginia, and graduated from Virginia Tech with a BS degree in Electrical Engineering.
His first wife and the mother of their four children, Joanna Bower Tucker died in 1999. His second wife, Gloria Slechta Tucker died in 2014.
He is survived by his children, Clifton Tucker, Jr. of Washington, D. C., David and (Kathy) Tucker of Sarasota, Florida, Brenda Tucker of San Francisco, California, and Matthew and (Micole) Tucker of Bridgeville, Pennsylvania and four grandchildren: Austin and (Jamie)Tucker, Elle Tucker, and Carson Tucker. He is also survived by two siblings, Jean Tucker Cox of Summerfield Florida, and Arthur Gilliam Tucker III, of Santa Barbara, California. His brother, James Daniel Tucker died September 29, 2020.
Hyde Tucker worked for 40 years in Telecommunications for the U. S. Air Force, C & P Telephone, AT&T, and Bell Atlantic. Among his assignments were CEO and President of Bell Atlantic International, Chief Operations Officer of the 4 C & P Telephone Companies, Vice President of Operations and Engineering of Bell Atlantic, Vice President of C & P Telephone Company of West Virginia, and Base Telephone Officer of Torrejón Air Base, Spain. He led the Bell Atlantic team in the successful acquisition of Telecom New Zealand in 1991.
He served on the vestry of Episcopal churches in Richmond and McLean, Virginia, Charleston, West Virginia, and Saint Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church of Sanibel, Florida. He was a warden of three of those.
In retirement since 1995 he served as Vice Chair of the board of Goodwin House, Alexandria, Virginia, and as a member of three advisory boards of the College of Engineering and one of the Cadet Corps of Virginia Tech.
At Sanibel he was on the board of BIG Arts, and was active in Current Events, the Forum, Great Books, the film society, a tennis team, and a Spanish conversation group.
He was awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal and served in a squadron that was awarded The Air Force Outstanding Unit Award (1957 to 1960).
Virginia Tech Engineering made him the Distinguished Alumnus of the College for 1998 and inducted him into the Academy of Engineering Excellence in 2003.
