She attended Phillippi Shores Elementary School and then Pine View School in Sarasota before graduating in 1994. Cat attended Guilford College in Greensboro, NC for two years, then transferred to University of Colorado at Boulder. She graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art History and Photography in 1999.
Cat attended a Master's degree program in Photojournalism at Boston University.
In 2006 she came back to Sarasota to finish her Master’s thesis and met the love of her life, Gregory Martin Pennenga. They married in 2009 at the Powel Crosley Mansion.
Cat worked as photo editor for SRQ magazine before opening Cat Pennenga Photography and later adding The Fancy Booth.
Cat was a founding member of SWEL, a Florida-based events association.
She was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer in May 2023 and passed on June 27, 2023.
A beautiful life cut tragically short.
She is survived by her husband Gregory Martin Pennenga, her dog Rufus Pennenga, parents, Allan and Martha Horton, brother William Horton, niece and nephew Stella and Wyatt Horton, many aunts and uncles and cousins. She is predeceased by her grandparents Freeman and Mabel Horton, Donald and Elizabeth Robin.
A visitation for Catherine will be held Thursday, July 6, 2023 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Robert Toale and Sons Funeral Home at Palms Memorial Park, 170 Honore Ave, Sarasota, FL 34232, followed by a funeral service from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM.
