Carolyn "Aunt Sandy" O'Brien, age 89 passed away on Tuesday December 26, 2017. Carolyn was born April 12, 1928 to the late Russell and Anna (Rader) Sandercock. She resided on High Street in East Bangor, PA until Oct. 1966, when she moved to Allentown, PA; where at that time Carolyn was a children’s wear buyer for Hess from 1966-1977.
She attended East Bangor Schools through 10th grade and graduated from Bangor High School in 1945. Carolyn went on to attend Roxborough Memorial Hospital Nursing School for one year prior to her mother’s stroke. She took several classes at Churchmas Business Center. While her mother was an invalid she sold Avon products, passed the Civil Service Test and was a substitute clerk at the East Bangor Post Office. Carolyn was employed at H.A. Berkheimer, at that time their office was their garage. She also served as Credit Manager and Office Manager at W.T. Grant Co., Bangor.
Carolyn was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, East Bangor, PA; where she was confirmed. She also was a member of Luther League, Church Choir and the Director of Ladies Choir. Carolyn taught Sunday School Class and organized Junior Luther League. She also organized a Girl Scouts Troop. Carolyn served as Chairperson for the Organization of Order of Rainbow for Girls. She served as the pass Matron, for the Order of Eastern Star, Ethel Chapter. She was a current member of the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and its Altar Guild in Sarasota; Chaired, the Ladies Auxiliary VFW Post 3233 in Sarasota; the Genealogical Society, due to her interest in family history, where she researched the Sandercock-Rader-Shook and O”Brien families; the Cornwall Family History Society; a Charter member of Penkernewek, PA Cornish Society; the Tam Kernewek Cornish American Society; the Pennsylvania Mennonite Heritage Society; the Irish Family History Forum and the Con-Edison Sunshine Club.
Carolyn is survived by her sister, Alice Sandercock; niece, Ann (Patrick) Green and nephews Steven Cormier and Paul (Vicki) Cormier; step-children Kevin (Nancy) O’Brien of Sun City, AZ and Rita Vacca of Scottsdale, AZ and son, Justin (Paige) Vacca of Phoenix, AZ. Sandy also leaves behind many special friends, great nieces and nephews and neighbors.
Carolyn was preceded in death by her husband in 2014, John Joseph O'Brien.
A visitation for Carolyn will be held Saturday, December 30, 2017 at 10:00 AM at Palms-Robarts Funeral Home, 170 Honore Ave., Sarasota, FL 34232. Following the visitation will be a funeral service at 11:00 AM. A Graveside Service will take place at 9:30 AM on Tues. Jan. 2, 2018 at Sarasota National Cemetery, Sarasota, FL.
