Carole Deborah “Pip” Ulin passed away peacefully after a three-month illness on February 23, 2023 at Aviva Senior Living’s Benderson Skilled Nursing and Rehab Center in Sarasota, Florida. She was 85 years old.
Carole was raised in Brookline, MA and attended Brookline High School (Class of 1955). She graduated from Vassar College with a B.A. in 1959, where she was a Child Study major and music minor, composing the score for two class shows. She earned a Master of Science in Education from Kansas University in 1980. During her college years she met her future husband, Walter Ulin (also a Brookline native), after being introduced by her brother and Walt’s classmate, Dr. Ronald Kaplan. Carole was happily married to Walt for 64 years.
She began a teaching career at the Nassau County Cerebral Palsy School in Roosevelt Long Island, and then became the music teacher at the Peabody School for special needs children, part of Newton, MA public school system, teaching a novel combined music and art program. When her husband took an executive position with Hallmark Cards in 1973, she moved with her family to Kansas City and became the supervisor of six daycare centers for United Cerebral Palsy of Greater Kansas City.
Carole was a lifelong lover of music, who could play piano by ear and brought joy to those she entertained tickling the ivories. She attended an array of musical performing arts, including musical theater, symphonies and ballets. After retiring to Florida in 1999 she became a co-chair of the Schools & Scholarships Committee of FASS (Fine Arts Society of Sarasota, now known as Arts Advocates).
All Carole’s homes reflected her flair for interior design and her lifelong passion for collecting art. She and Walt often hosted book, film, and temple (havurah) discussion groups. She fulfilled many dreams traveling the world with Walt. She was a co-founding member of Congregation Beth Torah in Overland Park, Kansas and a lifelong tennis fan, seeing some of the greats at Brookline’s Longwood Cricket Club, the U.S. Open, and Wimbledon.
Carole will be remembered as a stimulating and caring friend. She leaves her devoted and loving husband, Walter Ulin. She was the mother of Jeffrey Ulin and Wendy U. Linden, mother-in-law to their spouses, Eve Weiler Kanne Ulin and Jonathan Linden, grandmother to Joshua Linden (and his fiancé Nora Harris), Matthew Linden, Charles Ulin, and Teddy Ulin.
Funeral services will be held at Stanetsky Memorial Chapel in Canton, MA on Tuesday, February 28, 2023 at 10 AM with interment to immediately follow in Sharon Memorial Park, Sharon, MA. A memorial gathering will be held at Aviva Senior Life in March.
