Angelina Santilli Phillips, 95, of Sarasota, Florida, passed away on Wednesday, November 15, 2022. Angelina was born the fourth of six children on December 2, 1926, in Steubenville, Ohio. Her parents, Joseph and Marianna Santilli, were poor Italian immigrants who came to this country for a better life.
Angelina adored her father, who was a hero and inspiration to her throughout her life. Her childhood memories were of America in the midst of the Great Depression. But her father Joseph kept his job at Procter and Gamble and managed to feed his wife and six children in one of America's hardest periods. This taught Angelina the value of hard work and the importance of budgeting and accounting.
Upon graduating high school, Angelina got her first job at the Irving Trust in Manhattan, where she was able to develop her talent for numbers and accounting. Later she followed in the footsteps of her father, older brother and sister and got a job at Procter and Gamble in Port Ivory, Staten Island. At Procter, she met her perfect match in Raymond Phillips, whom she married in 1960. The couple moved to Florida in 1973 and resided there until the end of their lives.
Angelina was one of the proudest Americans you could meet, because she was truly grateful for all the blessings this country bestowed upon her. From an impoverished childhood she went on to enjoy the good life that America gives to those who work hard and follow the rules. She felt it her duty to be an informed citizen and had a lifelong interest in politics. She voted in every election from 1950 to 2022, even just days before her death.
She loved Italian food, both to cook it and eat it. Her mother taught her to cook at an early age, which developed into a lifelong passion for Italian food. She held exquisite parties for friends and family with fare outclassing the best of restaurants. Her cookbook collection filled an entire bookcase. She was truly a gourmand's gourmand.
She is survived by her five nieces and five nephews.
Angelina is preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Phillips; three brothers, Carlo, John, and Joseph Santilli; and by her two sisters, Mary Grace and Liberatta Santilli.
A graveside service will be held for Angelina on Friday, November 18, 2022 at 1PM at Sarasota Memorial Park, 5833 S Tamiami Trail, Sarasota, Florida 34231.
