Allen Simon Lewis, 87, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on June 30th, 2023. Allen was born on September 10th, 1935 in Detroit, Michigan. He was the son of Jack and Olga, and the little brother to Carl, Linda and Joan. His parents learned that they had a special son when Allen scored early triumphs in life, including the title of top canoe-er at Camp Tamakwa, a Jewish summer camp across the border in Canada.
Allen attended the University of Michigan, both as an undergraduate and then as a medical student. He went on to specialize as an orthopedic surgeon and was named Chief Resident of Orthopedic Surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital, as well as a Teaching Fellow at Harvard Medical School.
After residency, Allen found his forever home in Sarasota, Florida. He opened his own practice and helped many people throughout his 27-year career. Allen most enjoyed spending time with his patients, talking and listening to their stories.
Allen was married to his beloved Patsy for 43 years. They met at Sarasota Memorial Hospital, where they both worked.
Even with his impressive CV, Allen would always say his greatest accomplishment was his children: Julie, Nancy, Susie, Jon, Matthew, Katie and Michael. He may also have mentioned Molly, Samantha, Bridget, Molly (2.0), Lily, Nick, Riley, Cody, and Lucky, his dogs.
Allen’s friends and family knew him as a larger-than-life personality who could strike up a conversation with anyone. He enjoyed making his opinions known, often through his many letters to the Editor of the Herald Tribune. He was kind and generous with a dry, effortless sense of humor.
Allen is survived by his wife, Patsy; sister, Linda; children, Julie Swansey (John), Nancy Davis (Jim), Susie Polsky (George), Jon Lewis (Jenn), Matthew Lewis, Katie Apton (Adam), and Michael Lewis; and 14 grandchildren, Jack Swansey, Ned Swansey, Annabelle Swansey, Chad Davis, Lily Davis, Max Polsky, Oliver Polsky, Frank Polsky, Samantha Lewis, Ellie Lewis, Alex Lewis, Jake Lewis, Lucy Apton, and Sophia Apton; and his golden retriever Lucky. He was truly loved and will be missed.
