She was born May 10, 1959 in Newport News, Virginia, the first of four children to John and Lucille Wenger. From 1965 to 1976 she lived in Israel, where her parents served as Mennonite Missionaries and her father established a successful travel agency. Settling in Mississippi upon return to the States, she completed high school, attended William Carey College, and graduated with a degree in physical therapy from the University of Mississippi in 1982. As she began her career, she found her way to Mobile, Alabama, where she worked as an inpatient physical therapist. There she met her husband Lamar, marrying in 1989, and giving birth to their wonderful daughter Caitlyn in 1993. Following years of service as the Director of Therapies at the University of South Alabama Knollwood Restorative Care Department, in 2006 she began teaching in the Physical Therapy Assistant program at Bishop State Community College, where she continued through several failed retirements up until shortly before her passing. She is survived by her husband Lamar Duffy; daughter Caitlyn Duffy; sisters Sharon (Paul) Montgomery, Julie (Frank) Allnutt, and Jenny Crutchfield; and numerous nieces and nephews, along with their ever-growing families.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a gift to the scholarship established in her honor at the Bishop State Community College Foundation, 351 N Broad Street, Mobile, AL 36603, with "Paula Duffy Spirit Award" in the memo line.
