Kim was born in Brewton, Alabama to Gilbert and Gloria Emmons on September 23, 1967. She spent most of her life as a resident of Saraland, Alabama. After graduating from Satsuma High School, Kim started working at Clower Electric Supply Company, where she met her husband, Richard Sim. Richard and Kim married in 1989, and they had two children, Myles and Hayley.
Kim, her parents, and her sister, Kris, began attending Shiloh Baptist Church in 1977. Kim was an active member of Shiloh for her whole life, playing on the church volleyball team, serving in the nursery for decades, and teaching the four and five-year olds’ Sunday School class for the last several years.
Family was everything to Kim. She became a stay-at-home mom after Myles was born, and she devoted herself to making life great for her family. Kim was constantly working to make every experience meaningful and joyful for the whole family, including her parents and her sister’s family. Whether it was a Disney trip, an afternoon barbecue, or a holiday, she was always planning special experiences for her family. And for her, the reward for that planning was the joy everyone experienced because of her efforts. She was a natural leader, and everyone in the family leaned on her because she always knew what to do. Planning was truly her gift, and she used her gift to provide so much love, joy, and support for her family.
What gave Kim the most joy was for her family to be together enjoying each other’s company. One of the things she often turned to for fun with the family was board games. Kim loved board games– from Scrabble to Ticket to Ride, she was always happy to play a game with the people she loved. Quality time together was always important to Kim, but birthdays were especially important. Every family member had a special celebration for their birthday, which meant that there was a birthday gathering at Kim’s house once a month. She made sure that everyone in her life felt loved all the time, but she believed birthdays were a time to put forth even greater care to celebrate people’s lives.
Kim’s love for taking care of others extended beyond her blood relatives. She was selfless in giving of her time and effort for anyone in her life, and she never asked for anything in return. Kim was a second mom to so many people over the years. Myles’s and Hayley’s friends were welcomed in her home any time, and she always took care of them like they were her own. Kim made an impact on so many lives because the effort that she took in taking care of others was undeniable and touching.
There was so much to love and admire about Kim. She was a fantastic cook, always making food for whoever was in her home and always looking for new recipes to try. However, this wasn’t always a strength of hers– when she and Richard first got married, she once almost burned the house down while making dinner. For years, she managed the Sim family-owned condo in Gulf Shores, and she always blocked out the 4th of July week for her whole family to pile up 10 or more people into that 2-bedroom condo. She took notes about everything in her various notebooks; she sometimes would transfer her handwritten notes into digital notes, print them out, and put them in a binder. She was exceptional at picking out gifts. She thought of others in every choice she made: she was making plans for her parents to one day live with her if they needed. She never stopped making plans. She took great pride in caring for and decorating her home. She turned one of her bedrooms into a room for her great-nephews, and she loved taking care of them. Kim did so much good in her life. Her life and impact cannot be contained in words.
Kim is survived by her husband, Richard Sim; her son, Myles Sim; her daughter, Hayley Hatchett and son-in-law, Tyler Hatchett; her parents, Gilbert and Gloria Emmons; her sister, Kris Hovey and brother-in-law Darrell Hovey; her nieces Natalie and Mollie Hovey; her great-nephews who were like her own grandchildren, Jaxon and Rowan Hovey; her dog, Ruby; and many other cherished family members and friends.
