Janie Griffin Gilbert

Janie Parker Griffin Gilbert – born May 10, 1919, died June 7, 2011 at the age of 92. Mrs. Gilbert was preceded in death by her father, Freeman M. Griffin, Sr.; mother, Sarah Janie Griffin; devoted husband of 59 years, Ervin L. “Red” Gilbert; brother, Freeman M. Griffin, Jr.; sisters, Martha Elizabeth Stanford and Cornelia Scanlan; and son-in-law, Paul E. Platt, Sr. She is survived by one daughter, Janette G. Platt; one son, Francis E. “Buddy” Gilbert (Gwen); five grandchildren, Paul E. Platt, Jr. (Alma), Judith Diane Kurth (Brad), Janet Kay Newburn (Donald), Richard Mark Gilbert (Mary) and Paul Jeffrey Platt; eight great-grandchildren, Jere Dominescy (Jennifer), Jon Matthew Davis (Millie), Candice Ashley Collins (Richard), Jennifer Megan Davis, Stephanie Lee Gilbert, Christopher Wayne Newburn, Ashley Rae Kurth and Tiffany Diane Newburn; three great-great-grandchildren, Hadley Marie Collins, Jonah Lyles Dominescy and Emma Kate Davis; nieces, nephews and other relatives. Mrs. Gilbert retired from Dr. Jack T. Coleman’s office after 47 years of service. She was a member of Saraland United Methodist Church. Special thanks to Mobile Infirmary Hospice, the Nurses and Aides at Cogburn Health & Rehabilitation Midtown, to Mrs. Gilbert’s devoted niece, Barbara Ardoyno. Visitation for Mrs. Gilbert will be from Radney Funeral Home in Saraland, AL from 5-8 p.m. Thursday, June 9, 2011. Funeral services will be Friday, June 10, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. from the funeral home chapel. Interment will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Saraland United Methodist Church Choir Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 415, Saraland, AL 36571 or to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
