Charles Anthony “Chuck” Evans, 91, of Saraland, Alabama, Sergeant Major U.S. Army Retired, went to be with the Lord on October 2, 2022. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife and best friend of 67 years, Bertie Mae (Mitchell) Evans. Charles passed away peacefully surrounded by his friends and loved ones.
Charles is survived by his brother Frances Eugene Evans, Mt. Vernon, AL and sister Patricia Webb Evans, Killeen, TX; he is preceded in death by his brothers Arthur Clifton Evans, James Roger Evans and his sister Josephine Moss Evans, all from Creola, AL; also by his dearly loved parents Anthony James Evans and Annie Lee Ellison Evans both from Creola, AL.
Charles was born in Bucks, AL on September 15, 1931, where he lived most of his childhood and teen aged years. He attended Vigor High School and later went on to serve in the US Army. He enlisted in the United States Army in September 1949 and after a twenty plus year career retired from the US Army at the rank of Sergeant Major in September 1970. In November 1969, the Department of the Army selected him to be a Command Sergeant Major. In his twenty plus year career in the Army he served in numerous positions of leadership and increasing responsibility. He served as a Combat Engineer on many Army bases within the US to include multiple overseas assignments in Germany and Korea. He served a combat tour of duty with the First Calvary Division in Vietnam from 1967 to 1968 as the Battalion Operations Sergeant for the Eight Engineer Battalion (Sky Beavers). His military awards and decoration include the Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Good Conduct Medal (6th Award), Army of Occupation Medal, National Defense Service Medal (1OLC), Vietnam Service Medal, and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal (2nd OS Bar).
Charles worked as a Senior Army ROTC Instructor at Vigor High for the Mobile County Public School System from September 1970 to June 1979. He then worked at Barton Academy as the Senior Military Property Custodian for the ROTC Program from June 1979 to September 1991. In his 21 years at the Mobile County Public School System he instructed thousands of students and had many longtime colleagues and associates, of which many became his close friends. Charles was an avid outdoorsman who love to both fish and hunt and was able to do so until his later years in life.
Charles is survived by four of his six children; son Michael Dale Evans (twin with Sandra Marie) and his wife Christa Gideons Evans of Semmes, AL; his three daughters Carolyn Diane Murphy of Saraland, AL; Virginia Gail Walker of Saraland, AL; and Sandra Marie Dussetschleger (twin with Michael Dale) and her husband David Doyle Dussetschleger of Brookhaven, MS; Charles is preceded in death by two of his children, his son, Anthony Wayne Evans of Vancleave, MS, and his daughter, Kathryn Elaine Doby Evans of Ocean Springs, MS. Charles has ten grandchildren, Chris, Michelle, Charlie, Willie, Shannon, Amy, Gary, Jennifer, Caylee, and Cathryn; he has nineteen great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives and life-long friends.
The Evans family would also like to express their sincerest appreciation to the Crowne Healthcare of Citronelle Staff and Team, this team performed in an extraordinary manner taking care of Charles for several years. The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the Walker family and other friends and neighbors of Pawnee Circle. We would like to thank God for the gift of his life and the blessing of the time we spent with him.
A memorial service will be held honoring Charles on Thursday, October 6, 2022, with visitation at 1:00 pm and the funeral service at 2:00 pm at Radney Funeral Home, 1200 Industrial Parkway, Saraland, AL. Radney Funeral Home in Saraland is caring for the arrangements and Reverend Al Moore will officiate. The Graveside Service will be at the Creola Cemetery near the Creola Methodist Church on US Highway 43 following the memorial service.
