Barry was born on August 1, 1946 in Mobile, Alabama to Ellen Brown Jennings. As a child he was adopted by his grandparents, Homer and Lela Brown.
Barry grew up in Mobile, Alabama and graduated from UMS. He attended the University of South Alabama, before joining the United States Army in 1967. He served in the Vietnam War, and was awarded the Army Commendation Medal with “V” device for heroism displayed on November 24, 1967. He was also awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device, two Overseas Bars, VNCG with Palm, and Sharpshooter Badge. Upon returning to the United States, he assisted with the Cadet Summer Training Program at West Point. Barry also served with the United States Army Reserve from 1969 to 1973.
On June 11, 1971, Barry married Pearl Haselmaier in Calvert, Alabama. He worked for Brown & Root for many years. After retirement, he worked for Securitas until 2018. Barry was a long-time member of Calvert Methodist Church.
Barry was preceded in death by his grandparents, Homer and Lela Brown; his mother, Ellen Jennings; and children, Clinton Jennings, Heather Jennings, and Gary Jennings.
He is survived his wife of 52 years, Pearl Jennings; daughters, Lela (Jason) Conner and Tamara (Brandon) Nicholson; and grandchildren, Carson Conner, Ava Nicholson, Mason Conner, and Weston Nicholson.
Visitation for Barry will be held at Calvert Methodist Church on Thursday, April 18, 2024 9:30 a.m. – 11 a.m., with a service immediately following. Interment will be in Calvert Methodist Church Cemetery, accompanied by military honors.
