1923 – 2024
Gay Oswald, a cherished centenarian of Santa Paula, CA, passed away on September 25, 2024, at the age of 100 years and 9 months. Born on Christmas Day in 1923, Gay lived a vibrant and fulfilling life marked by her outgoing nature and love for dance.
A lifelong resident of Santa Paula, Gay grew up on Limoneira Ranch, attended Briggs Elementary School followed by Santa Paula High School, where she formed many lifelong friendships. Her jovial spirit and passion for life were evident in her love for Bridge, a game she mastered at a young age under the tutelage of her mother. Gay was well-known in her community for her Bridge skills, often hosting games on Saturday afternoons and participating in ladies' Bridge nights every Thursday.
During WWII she began working for the Dept. of Agriculture, Division of Plant Quarantine in Los Angeles. She returned to Santa Paula, working at the Boy Scout office on 8th Street under the direction of John Gesford. In 1945 she married her childhood friend, John Taylor, with whom she had 3 children. She left the workforce in 1947 to raise her family and didn't return until 1960. At that time, she worked for Santa Paula Citrus Fruit Association until her retirement in 1980.
Gay met the love of her life, Bill Oswald, at her 30 year high school class reunion. They were married in 1974 and celebrated 25 wonderful years together until Bill's passing in 1999.
Gay's social life was further enriched by her and her husband Bill's membership at the Oxnard Elks Club. The couple enjoyed frequent social gatherings, dances, and camping trips with the club. Their love for travel also took them on numerous camping adventures along the California coast, into Oregon and Canada, creating lasting memories.
Gay deeply valued family and is survived by her daughters, Joy Giorgi of Coarsegold, CA, Ginger Taylor of Ventura, CA and Dyana Oswald-Houser (Richard) of Carpinteria, CA. She was a loving grandmother to Kathy Clark (Steve) of Lompoc, CA, who lovingly cared for her in her final year; as well as Tishana Debenham (Adam) of Bakersfield, CA; and Katy Leisten (Robert) of Lake Isabella, CA. She also leaves behind her great-grandchildren, Bryan Cline, Azurdee Clark, Seth & Addison Debenham; Riley, Dane, Warren, and Hannah Leisten. Gay was preceded in death by her beloved husband, William Oswald, and her son, Robert Taylor.
Gay's life was one of joy, generosity, and an unwavering commitment to her family and friends. Her legacy will be cherished and remembered by all who knew her.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude and thanks to our Mom's caregiver, Tess, who unselfishly cared for her these past 5 years.
