Born in Bocas del Toro, Rep. of Panama to Lou Kwai Tan and Chen Ah Sam of China, Elena was the 7th of eight children. Her parents had immigrated to Panama in 1893, and settled in Bocas del Toro where she and her siblings were born. At the age of 11 the family returned to China, while her eldest brother remained behind to manage the family business. An arranged marriage at the age of 14 returned her to Colon, Rep. of Panama, where she married Chung Shian Chin at the age of 15.
Elena went on to have six children: Rupert, Ronald, Gloria, Richard, Trudy and Gina. She had a big heart, and opened her home to cousin, Nora, who came to live with her for many years, as well as to cousins Anna and Santiago. Mother-figure, friend, adviser, mentor, confidante to many, her door was always open. Her household was always bustling with activity, not to mention the strange pets she allowed her children to keep in a tiny apartment: dog, fish, turtles, chicken, and an errant pigeon which wouldn’t fly away!
Elena was talented in so many ways. She spoke Chinese, English and Spanish, was a gifted cook, and a self-taught seamstress. She would see dresses in the magazines, figure out how to design and cut out a pattern, and copy the dresses. She sewed dresses for her daughters for Sunday mass; neighborhood ladies would bring magazines to her and ask her to copy the dresses for them. Her repertoire included fine, hand-sewn lace and beaded wedding dresses. She also taught herself to crochet, and made delicate baby blankets, booties, caps and sweaters.
Traveling with her children brought her much pleasure. She was able to return to her native Bocas “for her one last visit” several times, as well as a return to China after more than 35 years. Trips to Vegas, Canada and Washington brought her much laughter and fun. She enjoyed country and western music, Latin music, Nat King Cole, and was a prolific reader. Elena taught her children to play jacks, liked a friendly game of mah jong, and loved to play Scrabble, which she continued to enjoy until her declining years.
In 1969 Elena emigrated from Colon, Rep of Panama, to join her children who had settled in San Jose, Ca. There she enjoyed her growing family and continued to foster the importance of family values. She is survived by her 6 children, 11 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren. She is greatly loved by her family who is tasked with continuing her legacy.
Elena was very devoted to the Blessed Virgen Mary and recited the rosary daily until infirmity claimed her. She lived a rich and full life, and was ready to begin her journey to the Lord.
