Vera Agnes Rocha was born May 30, 1923, in Plaquemine, Louisiana, passed away March 22, 2011, after a long illness of dementia. Vera moved to California in 1929. She was a long time resident of Oakland moving to Castro Valley in 1971. She is preceded in death by her husband, Gabriel F. Rocha, 2 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren, her parents, John and Cecila Schlater and her 12 brothers and sisters.
Vera was the loving mother of 10 children. Midge Baca, Nancy Luna , Evelyn Leandro, Larry Rocha (Nancy), Greg Rocha (Rosemarie), Donna Cutrufelli, Robert Rocha, Joseph Rocha, John Rocha (Debby) , and Mary Thomas (Tim). She was the loving grandmother of 31 grandchildren and 52 great grandchildren.
Vera was a 1942 graduate of Castlemont High School. She volunteered with Vesper Hospice from 1979–1989. She was a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, where she was past president of the Altar Society, a Lector and Eucharistic Minister, member of the First Friday Club, Parish Guild, and a choir member. She taught CCD classes at St. Benedict’s parish in Oakland for many years and was awarded the Pope Pius X Medal. Vera enjoyed time with her family, playing card and board games and time at the Deer Club.
A Vigil service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, March 27, 2011 at Holy Angels Funeral Center, 1051 Harder Road, Hayward, visitation will be from 1:00 – 5:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 29, 2011, Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, 3433 Somerset Road, Castro Valley, burial to follow at Holy Sepulcher Cemetery.
