Mary Katherine Angelo was born in Redwood City, California to Louis and Kate (Stahor) Radich. She was the eldest of three girls (Katherine Cardosa Allen and Virginia Mardesich). Mary was born in 1924 in the shadow of the great pandemic of 1918. She was too young to remember anything about that pandemic but was outspoken about the latest one that interfered with her greatest pastime, spending time with family.
Mary spent her early years in Santa Clara where she started school only speaking Croatian. She went to Jefferson Elementary and went on to Santa Clara High School. She met the love of her life during high school when Ed Angelo came to work on her parents’ cherry orchard on Reed Lane. Shortly thereafter, Ed went away to serve in World War II and they continued to develop their relationship by mail. When he returned, they were married which was quite an adjustment for her. She always felt that she had to get to know him all over again when he returned from the war.
Mary and Ed went on to start a family having two sons, Robert and Donald. As they did in those times, Mary became a housewife devoting all of her time to maintaining the home and taking care of the kids. Robert and Donald never came home from school without Mom there to take care of them except on election days when she volunteered to count ballots.
As Mary’s family continued to grow, she transferred her caring to grandchildren. Robert soon married Marcia Korsak and brought Mary two of her great joys, Adam and Leah. Donald married Carol Vivit and also gave Mary two more grandchildren, Jessica and Daniel. She was well known for attending every sports event for her children and grandchildren.
By the end of Mary’s life she had four great grandchildren: Sadiyah, Landon, Sierra and Grayson. In her last days, when Mary didn’t have the energy to speak, she was told that she had another great grandchild on the way and she excitedly winked in her expression of joy.
Mary surrounded herself with people she cared for deeply and treated everyone like family, whether they be a relative, a friend, or a neighbor. She shared her vibrant spirit with others and we will all carry that love and care with us. We all Love you and we will all miss you.
