George N. Mavrakis passed peacefully into the hands of God, January 15, 2015 at the age of 94. Born in Trinidad, Colorado he was the son of Cretan immigrants Nicholas P and Mary Mavrakis. He grew up in the coal mining towns of Carbon County Utah where he graduated from high school, later graduating from the Business Institute in Detroit, Michigan. Proceeded in death by two sisters, Liberty Mavrakis and Kula Francis, he is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Thelma of 70 years of love and companionship, three sons, Nick, George (Laura) and Steven and Jim Brunton whom he thought of as a fourth son, five grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren, his brother Michael (Ruth) and many nieces and nephews. Upon marrying Thelma in 1944 in Price, Utah, they settled in Salt Lake City, Utah until moving to San Jose in 1964 where he was actively engaged as a Realtor followed by ownership of Chubby’s Broiler. He was a member of the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church of San Jose serving on the Board of Council for several years including that of President as well as serving on the Mixed Council of the Diocese of San Francisco. Always proud of his Cretan heritage, He was a founder of the Icaros Chapter, Pan Cretan Association and served as the President of that chapter. George was a past member of the Pro Bowlers Association, bowling several “300” games and continued to enjoy this activity until poor health made participation too difficult. He also had a passion for fishing and took advantage of it whenever possible. George, dedicated to his Country, proudly served in the United States Marine Corps during WWII in the Asiatic Pacific and again in the Korean War. So proud of his two Honorable Discharges, the Flags of the United States and Marine Corps Pendant proudly waved displayed in his home’s front yard. He was a lifetime member of the USMC League, The Veterans of Foreign Wars, The Disabled Veteran of America and the American Legion, Post 99. The Patriarch of his family, George loved being surrounded by his family and friends, especially the grandchildren and great grandchildren. The Patriarch of his family, and Icon of the Greek Community and a friend and mentor to all he came in contact with during his life, he will be truly missed but continued to be loved – May His Memory be Eternal. The Trisagion and Funeral Services will be held at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, 1260 Davis St., San Jose. The Trisagion will be held on Thursday, January 22, 2015 at 7:00 PM.
