David John Sargent, 87, of San Jose died Sunday evening, November 22, 2020 from complications of pneumonia.
Born on December 18, 1932 in Charleston, South Carolina, son of the late John F. and Gertrude (Ryan) Sargent.
Dave was raised in Dedham, Massachusetts, he attended Dedham High school and Boston College and received a B.S. and B.A.
Before entering law school, he served 3 years in the Navy and graduated from the U.S. Naval Officers Candidate School. He was a lieutenant (j.g.) in the U.S. Navy Supply Corps aboard the USS Tanner in the Mediterranean off the coast of Turkey, and was awarded the European Occupational Medal.
After his discharge he attended Suffolk University Law school, and graduated with the second highest scholastic average in his class.
He worked for the Chrysler Motors Corp in Dedham, Massachusetts prior to being appointed to the Massachusetts Defenders Committee in Boston, MA and engaged in the private practice of law at Sargent and Sprague in Dedham, Massachusetts.
In 1966, he moved to Los Angeles to work again for Chrysler Motors as a District Sales Manager.
In 1968 he joined the Federal Bureau of Investigation as a Special Agent, and primarily engaged in the investigation of federal criminal law, background investigations and national security cases. The areas he was assigned to included: Quantico, Virginia; Omaha, Nebraska; San Francisco, California; Eureka, California; San Jose, California; and Palo Alto, California.
In 1988 he retired from the Federal Bureau of Investigation after 20 years.
He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Jeanie; his daughters, Debbie and Kathy; and step daughter Jennifer, as well as 6 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren and many loving in-laws, cousins, nieces, nephews, and longtime friends in Massachusetts and California.
In both his personal and professional life Dave (a.k.a. “Handsome Davey”) embodied the traits aligned with the Bureau motto “Fidelity, Bravery, and Integrity”!
